Help me stock my future bichir tank.

the ornate will get to 2 feet.
but grow slooooow.
i'd keep that ornate,a few senegals, maybe 3 delhezis, soem of the palmas subspecies and maybe a few ropefish.
with super filtration.

Ornates only grow slower when they reach about a foot or so. When under a foot, they grow about the same rate as most bichirs. The thing about ornates also is that they have much more girth compared to senegals and delhezis. They have all of this mass to carry around and those tanks will start to look small. So I think the 80 gal will be way too small for an ornate especially if it's a corner one. I would stick with the smaller species like dels and senegals. And you might want to start shopping for an even bigger aquarium if you intend to keep the ornate for life.

As far as behavior goes ornates tend to be shy around people. That's why yours would go and hide when he sees you or anybody. But when you're not around they are out and about exploring and doing what predatory fish do which is look for food.

I see, what would you recommend as a relatively small(fit in an 85 gallon tank) but active polypterus?

The most active ones are senegals and pollis. Delhezis are fairly active also but not as active as the first two IMO. All three stays around 12" so they should be alright in the 85 gal.

Do you know any good places that have pollis? I've never seen one in a fish store or on an internet site.

lots of palmas and delhezi and senegals!!!
