Help! my arowana is acting strange

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
By the way thank you for the comments. Any help is much appreciated...I am pretty emotionally invested in this fish as I've raised him from being just a little two incher to the big guy he is now. If he died I would be very upset.

Your welcome! Yeah to many water changes (WC) can cause some problems to not just the fish but the whole well being of the tank's health your taking out the beneficial bacteria which cleans the fish waste in the tank for you. If you have a good enough filtering system and plenty of beneficial bacteria, really the only reason you would do a WC is to help clean out disease and bacteria (or if you have high ammonia levels) and to lower your nitrites.

If the Nitrites ar as high as you say then can you see any brown coloration around your fish's gills?

My nitrites are actually very low. My biological filter is well enough established that it takes care of all nitrites and ammonia...it's my nitrate level that is pretty high. If I'm not mistaken the only way to truly lower nitrate levels is water changes, but I'm worried it will stress my fish out to change 75% in just three days. Also, I'll make sure not to siphon my gravel so I don't think I will be removing any of the beneficial bacteria (I think most of it is probably in the filters anyways). I guess my true worry is whether or not my fish is acting that way because of the nitrates in the tank or if its something else like a disease.

Oh i'm sorry I got Nitrates and Nitrites mixed up:duh:! yeah 75% is quite much if your going to go ahead with the WC then I think you should do a 10-25% instead and well actully the beneficial bacteria is everywhere in the tank. Well how long did you say you had the aro?

Don't overdo with the water changes. My aros definitely do not like when i muck aroudn with the tank during water changes.

35 nitrate is not that high. Of course, zero is a dream but 35 is definitely not high.

Add air stones to increase oxygenation. Switch off the light, if you got any.

I've had him since February of this year. He was only 2 inches long when I first got him. He's a real fast grower....well over an inch a month.
