In a house where they have zero access to water or wet ground, I'd say a few hours at most. It is believed that the can survive a month or two out of water if they can keep their gills moist, but I don't think that's the case.

I dont think thats completely accurate, some of my local grocery stores get live crayfish from Louisiana. They get shipped here in dry boxes and the retailer just usually leaves them in that very same box to be sold by the pound. Same with blue crabs.

I had a crawfish climb up the wire for my heater and fall to its death. (6 feet onto hardwood flooring) I then put it back in the tank where it floated a while and got devoured to the bone by the pacus i had at the time.

hope not, but the macaw? on your shoulder might have found him as an experimental morsel.

nah, the bird was in his cage all night. though, if i recall he was squawking early this morning... Maybe the bird was trying to tell me of the escapee?

I left containers of water out in various places in the house. hopefully she will find one. I will continue the search after work. Hopefully she will have survived.

The Crawfish could still be in the tank. Sometimes when they molt they find a dark crevice in the tank to hide during the process since their soft bodies will be very vulnerable. You might want to check under the arrangements. Just be careful, if it is molting it can be easily damaged. It may show up again in the tank in a few days a bit bigger and brighter.

They were most likely delivered in a reefer truck (cool temps slow down bodily functions, requiring less oxygen, therefore less gill usage), or the boxes weren't completely dry, I.E. wet towel in the bottom....etc. A crawfish uses the gills to breathe, and the gills have to be moist to allow that to happen.

Gills not moist = death

With that said, there is a significant probability that the crawfish is hiding so well, that you just can't find it. Also remember that they can get into places you wouldn't think they could, so check inside of the decorations as you check underneath them.

the crayfish was in a 10 gallon quarantine tank with only one decoration. unless she buried herself well (I dug around in there), she is no longer in there. I just got her on friday

maybe u sleep walk and u cooked her up and ate her while u were sleeping.....

Glad you got your car back, Carefree_Dude!

I found my tree frog behind the toilet when it escaped. I hope your little guy makes it. If you don't find him, I can send you a crayfish for free if you cover shipping.
