For whatever reason, I seem to be a stray dog magnet  :duh:
Of course, all these 'free' dogs usually come with nice vet bills from getting them back in shape and healthy, and as much as I really could use the money in other areas of my life, I guess i just feel fortunate to be in the situation where I can do something to help them. In your sig it says something about Texas, but your location doesn't say Texas  If you're in Houston, I'll give you the info for the vet I use, he's very affordable compared to others.

My latest 'foundling' had mange. I came home from work the day after returning from a trip, and thought there was a dead/rotting cat under one of my parked cars. Turns out it was this little dog

You can see how bad her skin looks, but I honestly regret not taking better close ups of her condition. She had Sarcoptic mange, which is caused by mites. Good news: treatable fairly easily, bad news: highly contagious to both other animals and people. Her skin was pretty much hairless on her legs, belly, and around her ears... it was very leathery looking, especially around the ears. She had raw open sores on her legs and body from biting and scratching (it's insanely itchy and uncomfortable for them). I thought she had a broken leg, because she was hopping and not putting weight on one of her back legs (both looked bad actually... I figured she had been run over by a car) but it was because the pads of her paws were literally peeling off because of the mange... they were red and raw... looked like hamburger meat... it was gross, and obviously EXTREMELY painful.
She ended up with her little arsenal of meds, she had antibiotic shots, steroid shots, some stinky sulfur bath dip, and antihistamines to help with the itching. Most of that was to treat the secondary problems with the skin, and the actual medicine to kill the mites was called Revolution, and it was applied to her back, much like the advantix liquid stuff for fleas/ticks/mosquitos. She has been getting that every 2 weeks, but then when I thought it was better, I skipped, and noticed her itching again, so she's back on it. It apparently takes a while to clear up totally, and my vet said that's the biggest problem, that people stop the treatments too early and it comes back again.
I found her the day and a half before the hurricane hit here in Texas (Sept 10th), and here are some pictures of her about a month after me having her

If you are standing behind her, one of her spots makes a heart :)

Anyway, there are different types of mange, as others have posted. If other dogs are getting it through contact with yours, I'd lean towards it being what this one had. The treatments really weren't that pricey, but my vet honestly totally hooks me up with good prices because I take in rescue dogs and take care of them. Look for vet clinics rather than vet offices if you're tight on money, also check with the SPCA or call some rescue groups in your area and see if they have any advice for more affordable treatment.

What your dog has is torturous though, it is so itchy and uncomfortable for them, they will literally chew holes in themselves, and you NEED to step up and find a way to take care of it. I'd limit where they dog goes to keep it on tile, and I wouldn't touch it too much, plus really wash your hands well after you do touch her. And keep her away from other animals.

(sorry for the worlds longest reply... but I figured I just went through/am going through this, so I figured it would help)
reading your rescue story brought tears to my eyes... i am glad this beautiful little dog found you....

OMG i live rat terriers! as well as my dog to. were gunna take her to the vet. but if my aunt doesnt anytime soon i will by my self and walk to one. i love my dog enuf to make sure shes healthy and everything.

Mate id sell everything i'd have of value to pay for a vets bill, no doubt in my mind.

I would also be at the vets right away, getting there is easy walking, hitching rides ect its been 5 days since you noticed she had it, come on get to the vets, no excuses.

Hope you get her to the vets, and she gets better, but mate, your dog comes before a fish forum, you would get much better advise from a vet as thats their job, you could of rang up, then got a lift down there and got it sorted there and then instead of having your dog sick and stressed for a unnecessary 5 extra days.

She's really a sweetie. I asked around, and someone from the next neighborhood said that the dog has been wandering there for months, and while her daughter was feeding her, it was clear that nobody was really taking care of her. She was happy that I took her in and was taking care of her. My mother decided to keep her (she's always wanted a little dog, and already has Rudy, the first stray that I took in living at her house.. he's about a 65 lb lab/chow mix) but she insisted that her name be Minnie instead of Pancakes, which is what I was calling her (come on... look at those spots... clearly a pancake suit!!)

Anyway, you can tell I'm not good at the 'long story short" stuff.. sorry...

Turns out Minnie was el-preggo when I found her, and she had one puppy last Thursday night. He's really big, considering how tiny she is (she's 12 lbs). There are problems though. She has heartworm really bad, and because of that, the valves in her heart are not closing properly. The poor circulation combined with the stress of being pregnant and nursing the baby made her severly anemic, and she was in bad enough shape that the vet said she would die if she kept nursing the puppy. Soooooo.... she now wears this sort of 'body sock' that my mom made from a pair of stockings with the legs cut off, so the puppy can't nurse off her, but can still be with her (this does not make for a happy puppy) and my mother is having to bottle feed the puppy all the time.

This is so typical with how animal things work out for us... never a dull moment. I'll try to get some puppy pictures up... he's so cute

(o, sorry for the thread hijack)

:( not yet. my aunt is guna take her dog cause she thinks her dog is in worse condition and i dnt think shes taking mine:( o well ill take mine then.

best wishes man wish i could help...

Please get your dog to a vet ASAP. I don't care if you have to walk several miles, or call a cab company to get a ride, and specifically ask if you can bring a dog into the cab (most where I'm from will allow it, it's usually up to the individual driver). Even if your aunt refuses to take your dog to the vet herself, can't she give you a ride? Or can't another friend or relative drive you there? I'm sorry, this topic is really bothering me, mange is quite a serious condition and I am a dog lover who firmly believes that people who neglect their dog (medical care, vaccinations, regular check-ups, etc.) should have their dog taken away from them just like they would a child.

The longer you wait to get treatment, the MORE EXPENSIVE it will be. The sooner you take the dog, the CHEAPER AND QUICKER the treatment will be. If you wait until the dog is in really bad shape, you are going to end up paying several times the amount you would have paid if you had just been responsible and taken the dog when you first noticed the problem. This is why I REALLY do not understand the logic of waiting until it's really bad to take the dog -- you will end up paying much more this way!! So save yourself some money, and save your dog a lot of suffering, and go to the vet. NOW.
