No pH adjusting products. Just get crushed corals.

Lupin,
We are both advising action to reach the same end. A ph buffering product will, however, be more "precisely controllable" than applying crushed coral. This is especially important depending on how experienced the originating poster is.

okay guys im gonna go back to my lfs and ask the boss, im pretty tight with him but hes always so busy, its a small store but lots of customers but thanks again guys!

many experienced fish hobbyists will say crushed coral instead of Ph adjusting chemicals because Ph buffers change the Ph to quickly. crushed coral does it in a slower, safer way. chemicals are usually a last resort

^^ I agree, crushed coral is better then chemicles in my opinion. I hate adding chemicles, only when absolutley necessary. You can also add texas holey rock. I would test your tap water as well, let it sit for 24 hours and test it. You should get that 55 gallon FAST, FH's grow super fast. They should not be in a 10 gallon.

I see where you are coming from here drdrewr. But keep in mind that using pH buffer product will jump the pH a lot. And this can be very stressful, sometimes fatal to your FH. Crush coral is more ideal because it slowly adjust the pH for your FH to reduce stress or whatever problem it may further cause to your fish.

They sell stuff at the pet store to increase your PH, might want to try that instead of all the water changes. And I would try to get him a larger tank as soon as you can.

no. did you read any of the other posts? learn from other more experienced members.

htyplatinum,

You've gotten great advice all the way around on this great forum. Based on the multitude of feedback, I am changing my recommendation and advising the crushed coral. Let your LFS know that this is the direction that you want to take and ask for additional / personal guidance on its application. If they are knowledgeable, they won't steer you wrong. If they recommend a buffering product (as did I), be firm and let them know that you would prefer to do this "without" chemicals. The others here are "right"!!! Only go with the more unnatural recommendations (like the one I gave you) if the majority advice has been attempted and hasn't worked.

Crushed coral for you, my friend, and "best wishes"!!! It is absolutely great advice from experienced keepers who have been here before.

crushed coral is fine for keeping water stable,an maintaining PH. Works too slow for raising KH levels, if tank is in trouble.. Most people use too little crushed coral anyway..He needs to find out what is causing his KH buffers to be eaten up? Dirty filters ? Too much food? What's KH out of your tap?

PH goes below 6 then the bacteria for your nitrogen cycle slows down and will start to die off if it goes lower.

BTW 10 gallon is a small tank in my opinion only good for a betta..

If your really interested in playing with your PH , google Sodium Bicarbonate use for aquariums.. helps stablize ph in overstocked tanks and in areas where KH tap values are little to none.
