HELP my RES got it arm tied up in string and is swolen!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Glad to hear the vet says it should be fine!!!!!

Don't worry about the temperature thing. That is an *easy* fix. At least, its easier then the leg.

that is just a general guideline. I can't say what's best for you personally as I don't know everything involved. If you have something that's worked in the past, I say stick with it. I was just shot-gunning some advice out there.

Yeah you right!!

THANKS a lot for all the helpful info...I will definetly keep yall posted in this thread!

If feral RES can survive hibernating during the winter in Canada they definitely wouldn't have a problem where you live. But I'd still bring her inside this winter just to play it safe. She should have a water temperature in the mid to high 70's to help her heal and build up immunities to her infection. I would also recommend giving her some food items high in vitamin A like shedded carrots, squash and zucchini.

I just got here and I tell you it isnt as bad as it seems:D Its a nasty wound but it isnt badly infected, it doesant look like that, what I see is simply that your turt got a bit itchy and removed part of the skin in the process like it happens to us. Use the cream the vet as given to you, desinfect a bit before with betadine, keep her inside for the winter and you should be fine:) Beleave me when I say that when it comes to wounds turts are true survivors. They walk with missing limbs, ripped necks, etc like if it was nothing. Here´s a interesting story that happened to me just yesterday and for wich I was going to create a topic. I was feeding some of my male maps and sliders in one of my outdoor tanks when I see a stange lumpy protrusion in one of my map´s lower eyelid:confused: I pulled the turt out of the water and become obvious that it was painfull. After a moment to imobilize the turt I began observing it. I pulled it and what was I amazed by figuring that it was a woule bee sting deply stuck in the flesh of my turt´s eye:eek::eek::eek: Im no cring baby but if that happened to me I would scream like a 2 year old. The bee must have fallen into the water and the turt got it but got stung. I putted the poor guy back, he fleed to the bottom of the tank but a few instances later he was back begging for food. This guys are thougff:D

WOW now that must have hurt a bit! I once caught a wild RES in a ditch that only had a skin covered bone for a rear leg. I don't know if it was a birth defect or something ate it off but it was surviving just fine....except that it was a little slow to get out of the way of the net lol.

I just kinda freaked when I saw it today..up until today the skin was not ruptured so when I saw that it had opened up I feared the worse!

I have seen your pond and have a few coments. First your basking area that is the peace of cork is way to small and unstable. second your turt is able to climb the pond edge with the very real possibility for her to fall and get lost. 3 your pond lacks a egg laying area, a absolute must have for female turts owners. To fix all at once I sugest this: first of you need to put plastic mesh all around the pond. Second you need to create both a better basking area and a egg laying area. For that you can divide your pond so to create a dry area or you can acoplate a conteiner filled with peat/sand mix along side rocks, logs ,plants, etc to the pond side with bridge for your turt to get into it(I think this is the better option). This will allow you also to grow in it eatble plants like hibiscus in wich your turt can munch. Also I think yor pond is kind of empty. You should ad rocks ,logs, some aquatic plants, etc. By the way thouse kois will grow far to big for your pond, koi is better suitted to lakes. But your pond is more than capable to house confortably several other res, preferably other females. I think res specialy females enjoy the presence of other turts. I see my females frequently interacting with other animals in non agressive ways. This is controversial but I think your turt is kind of lonely. Suitable tank mates include yellow belly sliders, cumberland sliders and big cooters. Try to find recued animals in need of a good home, there are thousands every year:)
