This is what I call disk rot and normaly is caused deu to bad watter. Your biggest problem is your botom supstrate much to big grinds. All kinds of durt can get in their and rots in their. Also to heavy for the ray to blow in their. Normally when you do a watter change and ad some salt it will stabilize. If your amonia is to high you would see red spots on the disk botom.

I would go with Frank's advice.

HEY !!!.....
I got the exactly same problem when i firts got my retic female. It was a group of external parasites that spreads to the hole body. Everything was just perfect and she was´nt eating as she was really new. Male was OK and in the same tank. I left her there and raise the Tº to 29ºC during a couple of weeks. She started to do short jumps out of the water just like saltwater rays does to clean out their skin of parasites. She was completely free of them in 10 days.......now she´s eating as normal and getting fatter everyday. If you want i can send you a group of pictures of mine to your email.

Good luck with this one ;)

Nope...i did not treat her with anything....that´s the weird thing about her. She treat herself by jumping out of the water. Saltwater rays do it this way, i´ve seen it and it works for them. Here you have the only pics i have fo her:

The parasites are over right eye, those thing looking like herpes spreading to the whole body.
You can see the marks on the ventral side of the disc, those are gone now as well as the round shaped parasites in the head.

I think that any call of "My Ray (or any other fish) is sick" should come with bang up to date readings for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, PH and Temperature.

I have found that most fish illnesses or deaths can be largely attributed to the water - parasites often only begin to "win" once the fish is ill from poor water.

I would test Nitrite and Nitrate in this case and whilst many say Nitrate is safe...it is not. Prolonged exposure to anything over 25ppm to 50ppm will lead to some form of health issues. Some tap water comes out the tap at close to 50ppm therefore if the Rays are producing waste it is easy to get up to 100 to 200ppm in a matter of 2-3weeks.

I have lost expensive fish to Nitrate and this is backed up by scientific research but it is taking a while for the hobby to listen as too many books still say that Nitrate is harmless. (there is a reason that safe limits for humans are set by water authorities and we do not live in and breath the water or have to osmoregulate)
