HELP Nitrite problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If there is any chlorine in the water, that will do it.

Great, now what??? I have some new fish due any day. I better not try this one. If the Nitrites are high, doesn't that mean it is in mid cycle???

possibly....I'd be a LOT more concerened about WHY it's in mid cycle and I certianly would'nt be adding new fish. Bio-spira will help and in my opinion you should do a 50% water change with filtered water from a water store. Pick up a clorene test kit from a pool supply store and test your tap water.

If youre on any public water supply you need to be using declorinator when changing water. If youre using your own well water it may be contaminated.

How was the tank cycled? A package of Bio-Spira, added to your filter after a large (80%) WC should fix things.

tank is not cycled yet! Change as much water as nessassary to reduce the nitrites to zero, use of a dechlorinator is highly recommended, unless you have well water. I suggest you get some bio-spira and add it according to the directions, before you loose the remaining fish. This will add the needed bacteria to get the tank cycled quickly. Good luck!

For a tank to cycle properly you NEED both the ammonia at first...and then the nitrites to grow enough of the approiate BB to complete the cycle...doing water changes BEFORE the cycle establishes itself slows the process and may well even stop it altogether...HOWEVER judging from the length of time this has been set up as well as the stated former test readings this is a cycled tank that has crashed for some reason.

Too many hobbiests think that once a tanks cycled that it's a perminate situation...it's NOT ....large sudden changes in stock...either up or down can lead to a cascade die off of the entire BB population of an aquarium.

I am waiting for the LFS to open this morning and will get some Bio-Spira. There are only two fish in the tank. The most there has ever been is three. That's why I am confussed. I believe my tank crashed during the last WC. It had completly cycled. I have a filter on my tap the takes out the chorline. It may need some work.
