ok since my 20 gallon didnt turn out well....(we had a storm and we lost power so the male died...not sure y but he was belly up...) and the female was then placed it her own 10 gallon hex and jumper out while on vacation it jsut didnt work..ow i would like to try to breed the bettas again so i jsut got a very colorful crowntail betta and he is building a bubblenest with out a mirror or the sight of a female so this is promising...ok so my question is could i use a 5.5 gallon for this? my mom said no more tanks and that is the only one i have that i could use (well its that or 2 one gallon aquariums...) so anyone think this will work? o and i've brushed up on my reasearch so i remember most of the general info now so ty for helping me :)

forget betta as your mom said no more tank.

so anyone think it would be possible to breed them in a 5.5 gallon?

No its not possible for both male and female betta bred in 5.5gal as it could get thing more ugly easily. What will you do with baby bettas? Not in same tank as when the males become sexually mature, they start to fighting each other then you have to house them singly....so can you handle 100 tanks at same time? And most lfs wont take baby bettas in. Again listen to your mom as shes your mother, give her some respect man. And ask us later about breeding betta when you are mature enough. Im sure any posters will say same thing for you..same answer it wont be work in 5.5gal

If space is an issue for you, bettas are just about the last fish in the world you'd want to try to breed. It's not even the males you have to separate, often the females fight just as badly as the males. Think of where you'd put 200 individual tanks...

Try a 10gal. a 5 gal might make it difficult (though some people have managed). What I've done with mine is have a 10gal tank filled about halfway up with warm, 84 degrees F, water, and I let it age for a week. Don't forget salt and anti fungal meds!!! A lot of times fry die because of the fungas in the water (it's sneaky, don't let it win). Keep the babies in the 5.5 gal so you can use the 10gal again. It's what I've been doing at least:) It has taken me 4 tries to be successful so don't loose hope!

i'd prob give some to my buds at skool and a few teachers...donate some....give some to the lfs and yes im mature rebel and i CAN handle alot of "aquariums" and while they would breed in the tank i would watch the whole time to be sure none get injured to badly so would it work if i keep an eye on them?

If i were you, I would change my plans about breeding bettas and stick with your swordtail fry. And please dont make any lame excuses about give fish away to school, kids, teacher, lfs, whatever, we tired of that excuse you used too many times. School seldom take any fish from their own students. LFS wont take any betta fry into especially these fry come from pet store strains. You cant keep eye on the betta 24/7, you know that. 5.5gal is too small for a pair of betta. In my view, you are not enough mature. So please do betta breeding later when you graduated from high school.
