First, if you are having a lot of trouble finding info on any fish (ie crystal eyed cat) there's a reason. Things that aren't commonly kept are not commonly kept for a reason. There have been some great suggestions as far as cichlids go. If you are liking the bichir idea, I would suggest your common senegalus. They are pretty easy to find, affordable, get good sized and I don't know of any major behavioral differences between it and other bichirs.
yeah i understand about the crysal eyed cat that you pretty much cant have any other fish with it, and i would assume that be the reason most people dont have one. But about cichlids im so torn because the more i read the harder it is is to choose cause there is so many i would like. As far as the bichir goes it does strike me as a interesting fish for sure. would it be possible to have a bichir and maybe like an oscar, red devil, or some other sort of cichlid?

i would decide if you eventually want another fish because if you dont thing you want any other fish then you can get whatever but if you ened up wanting a few more when you switch to the 125 gal i would get something like an oscar or something that is aggressive but not so aggressive that you have a lot of problems. i started out with a midas, oscar and 3 tinfoils and the midas was eventually too aggressive so i sold him and now i have an oscar, jack dempsey, 3 tin foil barbs, striped rapheal cat, tiger shovelnose who get along great but i wish i had thought it through more before i started because i wouldn't have got the midas in the first place i started them out when they where very small in a 40 gal and now have a 6 ft 150 gal and am happy with the selection i have and they eat feeders just not good for them as a regular diet make sure you feed a variety of food i give 2 kinds of pellets, vegetables, blood worms, beef hearts and flakes and they are very happy

I'd go with datnoids or/and smaller bichirs/polypterus.
There are alot of polypterus out there that would go great in a 55 such as Delhezi, Senegalus, Palmas Polli and a few others.
I'd suggest one of each that I named seeing they seem more personable then others.
Out of all the polypterus I have had(Endlicheri, Senegalus, albino Senegalus, Ornatipinnis, Lapradei, Delhezi, Palmas Polli) my albino Senegalus were my favorite and they are one of the least exspensive.

datnoids was my first choice, amazing fish very fun to watch after they stop being so shy and even when they are shy they are very fun to watch how the sneak up on their prey during feeding
