HELP! Oscar dying after 25% water change

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Do you know anyone who keeps fish? Call them and ask...

If water parameters are good, why would bio media crrect the situation? He said it smelled, you mgith wanna add some more carbon or chemical media of some kind. My guess is the water is contaminated.

Horrible suggestion..sorry....Look at the tank...It is new....It needs established media to cycle quicker....I trust my eyes more than someones abilities to test for and post the results of the needed test to tell me what my eyes can see......:nilly:

You must bring down the ph to a safe level 6.7-7.2. Change out 15% of your water every 2weeks in stead of 25%. If you go to the pet store ask for something to remove the chem. from your water a product like stress coat you can add it to the water and in 2 mins add the water to your tank. also you need to watch the ammonia levels in the tank. This should never reach 1.0-4.0 ppm its best to keep this as low as 0-0.50. Good luck.....

Quick way to save a fish is by washing out whatever chemicals or bad residue inside its gills..

If u have filter with clean fish water.. i suggest placing the fish in your hand and use the filter water in his gills and flush out the bad residue...

after that.. like the other guy said.. place the air pumps right next to his head.. that way he'll get the most amount of oxygen...

Some Water Conditioner will be excellent.... i've never used media so no idea..
in fact.. water conditioner is the best way to make a whole new batch of fish water....

Kordon's are the best brand for water conditioner

PS: Its more of a risk for your other fish too if they are still inside the tank.. don't risk it.. ur tank's water might be fully comtaminated.. so pill out your other Oscar and Pleco until u can get some water conditioner and remix a whole batch of water..

Rotten egg smell usually means ur water has high level of sulfer, ammonia, nitrate..

I agree with spizz, I'm guessing the ammonia isn't at the levels we are told. If the water clouded last week, im guessing that is because the tank was cycling. Also, did he ever turn down the temp, as its going to decrease the oxygen levels the higher it is. I would get air stones in there, check the filter to see if its clogged and if so rinse in tank water (in a bucket), and disturb the gravel, as that smell comes from anerobic (without oxygen) bacteria, which will cause the fish to gasp as you described. Also if you overfeed, that would have further worsened it. One more thing, did you add conditoner to your water after the change? if not, you need to!

This tank is actually 3 years old.

The other Oscar started going down hill so I made a call to the city water dept.
They lost a pump for a bit and may issue a boil water alert. They told me to run all of my water for 30 min and see if it still smells. The TAP water was what was smelling like rotten eggs.

I didn't find any nitrates, or nitrites, or ammonia in the tap and PH was 7, but after about 5 min of running the water went back to normal smell. Did a large water change after 30 min and everything is looking good. The other Oscar has quit gasping.

The really sick guy is back in the tank and looks like I'll loose him. He's trying to swim but keeps ending up sinking upside down.

I use Amquil and Amquil +, a full dose of each. I had a bad batch of Amquil a few months ago that caused me to lose my 8 year old Pleco and some Africans. I will never trust just using one bottle again.

There is NO way that tank is three years old....Maybe the tank itself, but trust me when I say, I can tell a new tank when I see it..Too many things to list...Look at your air hoses..New...Gravel....New....Decor...New....Intakes ... New...Fish...New.....Don't give me that crap...I'm trying to help. Maybe the city water is to blame, but your tank is cycling because it is new....And they do that.....

Here's a pic of the tank from 11/16/2006

I lost everything 3 months ago. Yes it is cycling again but I thought I still had some bacteria because I kept some feeders in the thank the last month.
