Actually in this case, the smell would be ammonia. His situation involves compact substrate where anaerobic pockets are present. The anaerobic bacteria involved produce hydrogen sulfide which does smell like rotten eggs. The fish must be removed at once because hydrogen sulfide is dangerously toxic and can cause acute respiratory problems. Stir the substrate (making sure there are no fish in the tank) and do lenty of water changes. Check water parameters regularly making sure they are all on levels suitable for the fish otherwise keep withholding and wait patiently until everything is stable. Next time, stir the substrate frequently and employ Malaysian trumpet snails to do the job.bigspizz;2463884; said:

sounds like water from the tap is contaminated if it has sulfur smell
I would try source of different water...tap water in fridge....get it to tnk temp and try that. tap water should have neutral ph and no amonia. It worked for me a while back when one of the kids dumped something into my 10 gal

Also this is worth noting, I know the OP said his Ammonia was 0. This could mean your test kit is no good. This is a problem for some people sometimes.
I think my liquid ammonia test is bad. The AP liquid shows no Ammonia but the cheep Pentair test strips show ammonia at 3.0 on a sample I took before the last change.

For two months there was nothing in it; I guess I lost my bacteria. I thought a month with some feeder goldfish would be enough to cycle the tank but I guess not.
Why is it so hard to believe that this tank is three years old? Because my air lines aren't yellow?
