HELP!!! Pima swallowed few rocks!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry I didn't see this earlier.

Don't try and make it cough them up.

If this is accidental, the fish will pass them with time. You're pushing the outter limit of it being off feed, but it's not to a worry point yet. What was it eating prior to this? Try supplementing the food with veggie oil (inject in dead fish etc...) It will help ease the passing of the rocks.

The other thing to think of is that larger predatory animals (fish, crocs etc...) will consume rocks to aide in breaking down food. It's not uncommon to see them do this. The rock churing in the gut acts like a blender to smash up what it has eaten. You might be seeing this behavior.

What temp are you keeping the water? I'd push it to 85-86F. Make sure you toss in an extra airstone as the temp creeps up. Is he swimming or laying on the bottom? Still gulping air like normal? Any other stress elements like tank mates?

why the airstone...???

Airstone because there is less oxygen in warm water. So adding the airstone increases the oxygen present.

Yep, not that I would be too worried about a gigas...but I assume there are other fish in the tank. Increasing the DO level will also somewhat relax the animal if it is stressed.

Also...do we know for sure he ate rocks? Was it seen? Or are there just abdominal lumps showing?

Yes... there are other fish in the tank.. but they are harmless, they all mind their own business. And she is still swimming around and going up gasping for air. The temp in my tank has always been around 84-86 Degrees. Before she swallowed the rocks... i use to feed her market shrimp, floating pellets, krill, and mealworms. and now she has no interest in any thing at all..:(
Is there any thing that i can give to her that will make her faint or knock her to sleep for awhile so that i can take her out of the water and find ways to remove the rocks???
