I just purchased a new tank and was looking for some feedback as the best way to set it up for rays. I have had stingray about 10 years ago so I'm not completely new at it to it but its been a while.
(I had a 65Gl tank with gravel and a simple canister filter, my ray lived for about 3 years until it died suddenly, and am looking to get back in it. (Yeah, now I know that my LFS gave me wrong advice)

The tank I purchased is very similar to the pic below, while the drop down feature is nice it does have its challenges.
Its approx. 200 GL with a 60 Gallon sump.
1) I have never used a sump so not even sure what media or filters to get. what is the best recommended method?
2) Should I add a canister as backup? will be tricky as I don't have room in the cabinet for it. However Im concerned that the "dropdown" part wont get filtered good.
3) I ran a water line right to the tank for easy water changes, is it best to change the water in the sump or directly in the tank?
4) Sand is the "safest", are there any "thicker" sands (similar to gravel) that can be used or better sands, so it has more of a "neat" appearance?

Thanks so much.
Thats all for now...!

Interesting tank

How much of a drop is it and have a picture of the sump?

Yes Definitely an interesting tank design there. Not sure how conducive to Ray keeping Only thing I can answer for you is the substrate question and caribsea peace river is exactly what you seem to be looking for
