Help sizing pump for 135g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the response. I think I will plan on doing the 2x 1" Dursos just to keep things simple, I am sure I will be tweaking it plenty. As far as sump design goes, I want to do section for mechanical, a section for fluidized bed with K1 media for bio, and a section for a UAS algae scrubber. I am in the design phase of that as well, I plan on using 3/8th acrylic for the baffles, unless people think I can get away with 1/4 inch

Double post

This is what I had in mind in regards to the plumbing and sump...

Is it better to use all rigid plumbing for the returns since it is pressurized, or can I use barbed fittings with flex tubing and hose clamps?

Thanks again for all the help

Interesting, I am seeing a tank with 2 overflow boxes for first time here. One other thought:
Use one overflow box (say left side) for drains with 2 pipes for main suction and stand pipe.
Use the other overflow box for return.

You can use barbed fittings and flex tubing. That is how I setup my 220.

1/4” plexiglass will be just fine for the baffles.

Use filter socks, not sponge pads. I used sponge pads and filter floss in my setup, which is similar to how your diagram looks, and I really wish I would have gone with filter socks.

For pumps, I agree with the others, run two of them for redundancy purposes. I have had one of mine not start back up after a power outage, but since I run two my tank still had half flow. I recommend you get two of the Jebao DCP 8000’s. That’s what I have on my 220 and I run them at about 60% for 1600gph. You can run them as low as 30% though.

Will filter socks alone be adequate mechanical filtration?

My knee jerk reaction is that 2 DCP 8000s might be overkill, but I guess running 2 pumps at 50% means if (when) one of them fails, I can turn the other up and still be at an maintainable level until I can replace the broke one.

Thanks for the advice

Really? I am redoing my sump and thinking of getting rid of the socks in favor of sponge pads with polyfil on the top.

Socks are soo much easier. What micron are you using ? I have my drains tee'd off so im using 4 socks it was a p.i.t.a having only 12 total. Picked up another 12 and just leave the dirty ones in a bucket. Once a month i throw em in the wash machine.

Op i wouldnt do a herbie unless you drill more drains. Having one siphon drain amd the single 1 inch emergency drain would end up being problematic.

I run dual herbies and you can definitely tee both stand pipes into one gate valve btw

Thanks for the advice J jaws7777 , I found some 300 micron 12" x 10" nylon mesh nut milk bags on Amazon that I think I could make a frame for and run my drains into.

What size filter socks do you use?

I use 100 micron socks from mcmaster-carr
