Help - something wrong with Texas lips/mouth

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Would recommend that. Scraping away infection doesn’t get rid of the infection necessarily. Can try furan2 and kanamycin.
kno4te kno4te , did you mean to write Would NOT recommend that?

If the jaw is simply dislocated, as kno4te said, the jaw should be easy to snap back in place with thumb and forefinger.
If it is solid and immoveable I suspect duck lips.
If so, the jaw may be totally atrophied by the infection
If it hasn't gone too far, it can be treated by using a antibiotic effective against gram negative bacteria.
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to check. He must of had this duck lip disease because he went down hill really fast.

I am now really worried for my other fish. Should I euthanize them all and sterilise my tanks and equipment if this bacterial infection is really contagious?

15yrs of fish keeping and I have never experienced anything like this. The only issue I've had with diseases/infections is ich from a store bought fish.... So disappointing.

This system I'm running consists of 3 X 85 gallon tanks which also has pool filter sand as substrate with driftwood and pots ect. What would be the best method for sterilising tanks and equipment?

Sorry for your loss!

Thank you deeda. I'm now really concerned for my other fish and not knowing what to do to combat this dreadful disease. I have another 4 tier rack opposite this set up in my fish room and worried if I have cross contaminated this disease.

I'll tag duanes duanes to see if he has suggestions.

At this point, the bacteria is in the tank, and whether the immunity of the other fish is strong enough to ward it off is anybody's guess.
If the water temp is above 82'F, I'd slowly reduce it by a couple degrees.
I don't know what the other fish are, but these northern Mexican Herichthys do not need higher temps.
I've kept them as low as high 60s. (a list of other species would help determine how far you can go).
I must admit after I experienced Columnaris, I sanitized the entire tank, all gear water touched, and expected any other cichlids in the tank were going to be goners. (it seems to sometimes be species specific)
But treating with antibiotic effective against Gram Neg bacteria could ward off the worst case scenario.
This is the one disease that prompted me to give all new fish be given a 2 month quarantine before putting in the main tank with others.

Thanks duane and D deeda . I have ordered some metronidazole, never used it before if I treat my system with this antibiotic will it eliminate the disease entirely from the system including curing my fish from the disease. I just want to knock this disease on the head and wipe it from the system entirely.

metronidazole
I don't think it'll treat columnaris . Metro treats internal parasites better .
kno4te kno4te duanes duanes RD. RD. Rocksor Rocksor could suggest better meds.
