Help stock a 125-150 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Stock looks good, my only consideration would be that with two male sajicas, one is sure to be dominant and give the other a hard time. I think you'd be better off with one sajica and one of another another species. suggestions would be c. panamensis, c. spirulus, or any other cryptoheros other than nanoluteus.

Thank you for the advice. I'm not really a fan of the cryptoheros line, but would some other similar sized cichlid work? Like an EB acara, guianacara?

So...

2 Gold Sevs
2 Blood Parrots
1 Male Sajica
1 EB Acara/Guianacara
1 Heckelii
1-2 Rainbow Cichlids
Diamond tetras and hoplo cats

Just wanted to say I really like that stock. I'll leave it to the experts here on whether it is likely to work or not but I'd try to do 2 rainbows if they'll fit as it could help them color up some. I also keep 2 gold sevs and they should do well with blood parrots

Thanks! I've never kept the rainbows before but have always admired them. Overall I'm going for a peaceful tank. Some aggression is fine but I'm aiming for fish that I'll have at least a little warning before I have a corpse. When this tank is assembled and stocked, the severums will likely be the largest fish in the tank as I plan on keeping juveniles.

So if I went with

2 Gold Sevs
2 Blood Parrots
1 Male Sajica
1 EB Acara/Guianacara/Some other similarly sized cichlid
1 Heckelii
2 Rainbow Cichlids
Diamond tetras and hoplo cats

does anyone think that is overstocked for a 6 foot by 18 inch tank? Is there really any benefit on these sized tanks between 125 and 150?

Sorry for the double post but I've been looking around the forum and would also consider replacing one of the blood parrots and/or some combination of the other cichlids with another large fish that is showy and colorful. Something like a red head synspilum but something that will get along with the rest of my fish. If at all possible. If not that's fine too.

Sorry don't mean to de-rail your thread but noticed you were raising some sajica fry. I've got some growing out in my 55. Those little guys are so much fun. Can't wait to see how they turn out.

Oh no problem. Yeah I bought 5 fry from a local guy here. Mine are still little but I have a few that are starting to show some really nice color.

Alright...new thought (I'm probably thinking about this way too hard)

The more I think about it, the more I want a large showy fish in the 6 foot tank. I'm leaning towards a vieja synspila (synspilum, melanurus, whatever it's called now). My fear is that this guy (on top of the blood parrot(s)) will harass the more peaceful SA Severums. Is this a legitimate worry or is it possible the Sevs will hang in there fine with the CA's?

Would it be terrible to keep the two severums in a 75 with a few bottom dwellers and some schoolers? If one becomes too aggressive I can put him in the 6 foot tank and see how he does.

Thinking that way, the 6 foot tank would become almost completely CA other than the tetras and catfish.

So with that the 125-150 would then become...

1 Vieja Synspilum
2-3 Blood Parrots
2 Male Sajicas
2 Rainbow Cichlids
Diamond Tetras and hoplo cats

Does this stock make more sense considering I want a large-ish fish in there? Open to suggestions and criticisms.

am I really gaining anything by doing a 150 vs 125 etc.
A larger tank will make it easier to maintain the water quality, your fish may also appreciate the extra room as they all grow up. :)

Thank you for that. That is very true and not something I had considered

Curious on people's opinions on the stock above or am I worrying too much about the severums and they will likely be fine? Would it be better if I replaced the vieja with something like a pearsei or bocourti? Would they do better with sevs and blood parrots than a vieja syns?
