Help stock a 125-150 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think two male Sajica would work, there too aggressive as they get older.
In a 125 or 150 I think you would be over stocked with a vieja or Cincelichthys added to your planned stock, personally I think a 180 gal min for either

If I reduced the number of blood parrots would that make it more feasible? Or something similarly tempered as a pearsei/bocourti that won't get quite as large? And reducing Sajica down to 1

From what I have read both Astatheros robertsoni, Oscura heterospila, get around the 10 inch mark and are easy going for ca cichlids.

Wow the heterospila looks amazing. Doubtful they are easy to find though. Hard to find any info on them.

So what would an appropriate stocking be with a hetero?

1 Heterospila
2-3 Blood parrots
1 Male Sajica (or a pair)
2 Rainbow Cichlids
Diamond tetras and hoplos

If I decreased the blood parrots to 1 would there be room for 1 or 2 severums? Or would sevs not be a good mix for this group? I can keep the 2 I have in the 75 if need be. Thanks dan518 dan518

I have a 6' x 18" 135g tank. Every single day I wish it was 6' x 24".
Every. Single. Day.

If you don't have the stand, canopy, or aquarium already I would reconsider if I were in your position.

That extra 6" allows you more flexibility stock wise, but the difference cannot be overstated when aquascaping - there is no comparing what you can do with wood & rock with that extra 6".

That would be a 180g minimum correct? I'll keep my eye out on that but it's not something I'm considering right now. Though I'll more than likely be buying whatever I can find on CL when the deal comes up. So if it's a 180 I may revise my plans some

You've kind of gotten away from what you originally wanted. I personally would try to find a way to put your severums in the new tank. That's what you wanted originally and I doubt you will be happy with them in a 75.

I would stick with your original thought of two sevs two parrots with a few smaller cichlids like a sajica and some rainbows. Then see if you can fit a showy fish like the thread fin or maybe someone else had a better suggestion for one.

That opens your other tank up to keep something else in like more of your sajicas or some other project

That's a good point and I agree. I'd really like my severums in the 6 foot tank. So if I went with my original stock...

2 gold sevs
1-2 blood parrots
1 male sajica
2 rainbows
1 other showy cichlid (heckelii maybe? )
Diamond tetras abs a few hoplos

Does anyone see any issue with that? Would a heckelli work?

My guess is that it would be fine. But I have little experience with these species myself and big tanks. So hopefully someone else can give a better answer. Probably worth a shot though. May have to reshuffle once they mature

Thank you. I like the heckelii but honestly don't know much about them. Saw they were peaceful so I put them in. But if there is another cichlid that would do better with this group I'm open to suggestions.

Does anyone else see any issues with this stock? Overstocked? Should be alright?
