So, my father-in-law has a 30g hex that he wants to put Oscars in, but he won't listen. So, I'm trying to distract him with colorful cichlids.

What could I put in this tank that would be brightly colored and not kill each other?

I once kept a pair of kribensis in a 30 gallon with some dither fish. They are colourful, easily sexed and will breed quite readily. I had some dither fish in with them. The only problem may be that the footprint is quite important and perhaps the hex tank may not have a large enough footprint. Alternatively you could go with some cool shelldwellers. They aren't the most colourful but there behaviours are really cool.

I'm still kinda new at this, can you elaborate on rams?

Thanks for the info. Trying to show them a few of these. I may have them talked down to some silver dollars, because the father-in-law wants something that "eats other things".

I couldn't sell the mother-in-law on exodons.

Silver dollars get to large for a 30 G hex as well.

Indeed they do. I didn't realize they got quite that big, thank you...Back to the drawing board.
