A couple of days ago all of the sudden he has this huge piece missing from his head and today it looks as if his flesh is just falling out of this spot and appears swollen all around it. Can anyone tell me if this may be something other than a injury or something more serious and what can I do to help him heal faster. Thanks

If it appeared suddenly, it is likely an impact site. Move it to a hospital tank if you have one, treat the water with Melafix, and do daily water changes to help speed healing along.

If gets worse or expands, you may need to post a thread in the disease section and get some opinions from folks over there.

Keep the water as clean as possible daly 25% water changes or at least twice weekly 50% water changes. You can add 1 tablespoon of salt per ten gallons of water and keep an eye on it, remember to replace salt removed by water changes. It should heal, if you see any signs of a seondary infection or it seems to get worse let us know.

Ok so do you not recommend the melafix treatment.

I would stick to the melafix since you already started. Keep water very clean an add ur usual stress coat or prime to spped things up in the healing process. I try to avoid chemicals and salt but everyone has their different methods. Makes sure to perform daily water changes with dechlorinated water to prevent infection. The looks of that abrasion makes it look like an impact with decor. No way that HITH

What are your water peramiters? Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and Ph. If you can post a new picture.

Keep up with daily water changes and treating the tank (I swear by Melafix, but the Epsom salt method works too). As someone else said, dose the tank with Stress Coat every couple of days. It helps to keep the slime coat in good condition during a time when its body will not be keeping it in good condition.

The flesh you are seeing hang off is likely dead tissue. It will fall off eventually. If it keeps growing or doesn't falloff in the next 2-3 days, let us know. If the impact site expands at all, let us know because that is a sure sign it is not just an impact.

The loss of appetite is common. Many fish can go weeks without food. Keep up with treatments and if it doesn't begin eating again in the next week, let us know. And I do mean not eating. If it nibbles a little, but doesn't eat a lot, it still counts as eating. ;)
