help tig

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Temperature is up for debate. I wouldn't really doubt Taksan's knowledge, but a lot of the people that owned Tigs generally keep them at 82. That's what mine is at and he is doing fine.

I think by having a HOB, you have decent surface agitation for increase oxygenation.

I would not move him/her to another tank or do anything too drastic to increase the stress level.

How is he/she doing this morning? Still upside down? Glad it spat out the shrimp!!!

It might not be a bad idea to skip the water change for now unless you feel that you HAVE to do a WC.

It sounds like he/she is on the brink of death, a WC with too different of water parameters could do too more harm than good.

White sturgeon also seem fine in 65F water.... except it shortens their lifespan. You should really try to mimic the temperature a fish would encounter in nature.

Not trying to start anything with you, just trying to suggest what's best for that fish in its situation.

I am not Tig expert, but since I had a couple, I did my share of research and just want to share that with the OP.

Planet catfish states temp at 24.0-28.0°C or 75.2-82.4°F.

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=354

So 82 is far from being out of range. It will also increase it's metabolic rate which can help.

As far as WC, be extremely cautious about adding water of different parameters to a sensitive fish in such a fragile state. Go real slow when you refill the tank if decide to do a WC. :)

A 20g really doesn't give you much wiggle room for water parameter errors.

If anything, you can try to add more aeration and/or increase water movement to the tank.

he has been flopoping right side up and upside down...all my tanks are at 82 but i am lowering it for the tig over time. im going to slowly do a water change.

Right

I wish people would do some research and read all my old threads about growing small tigs

You do have a chance of saving the tig even if he's upside down as I had one upside down once and it was still feeding

I'm sorry to say but if you had read all my old threads on tigs you will find chances are you have done the damage yourself by feeding shrimp

Small tigs below 12 inch seam to have problems digesting shrimp prawn and other salt foods

You say you are feeding every 2 days that's a good thing but don't feed the tig so much that it has a big fat belly as this is not good for young tigs as they are rubbish hunters and are lucky to get large feeds once per week

I have only been able to save on tig once it went upside down you need to up the temp to 86 and add lots of aeration and I mean lots

You also need to keep the tig up right I know this is hard but you will need to work hard to save the tig

It may take 2 days of hard work as you need to hope the blockage passes

If you look at the tig it probably looks fat an puffy and you may see a large lump infront of the dorsal fin

Good luck I hope you can Save him

Richard

Glad you chimed in Richard. Was trying to dig up your old threads to post them here.

Really learned a lot from reading your old threads.

I hope this Tig makes it! :)

It may take about 10 days of the tig not eating but you stand a much better chance with small tigs if you feed pellets

Once the tig gets to 12 inch it's safe to feed anything

Most people go wrong when they have a small tig in a grow out and they are in a rush to grow the tig fast by feeding lots of food

Feeding the tig real fat is a bad thing

Tigs only seam to hunt in a very small space sometimes you even need to throw food at the tigs head before he can find it

okay i will add more oxygen and up the temp....but i dnt feed him untill he is gonna pop...and he doesnt look swollen he looks thin and all like scrunched up like he just had a stroke lol idk he is doing better tho i no that much its just so hard to watch

^It's not so much just the overfeeding in this case (you may not even have overfed).

It's more to do with the fact that they can't digest the shrimp meat and salt content properly. That's why they vomited it back up.

Just keep trying, that's all you can do for now :)

When and if he gets better. Try giving it "Sinking Carnivore Pellets". They soften up really fast in water and smells, my Tig loves them.

Even my picky discus take em.... lol.

Richard:

I gathered since they has such poor eye sights, couldn't imagine them being the top predators at a young age.

It sometimes seems awkward to me when some people pump their tigs up to the point that look like a log... lol

I rather keep a lean and healthy tig than a obese tig to brag about how big it is. :)
