do you have well water? or is your water naturally not chlorinated? i would assume that if it was chlorinated, and you don't use dechlor of some sort, you'd have lost a lot more fish by now.

that being said, if your friend does use dechlor and you don't use any, there is also a WQ difference there that could have played a part. if you just have well water or something, that shouldn't have been enough to kill the gar though--

you dont dechlorinator?
im pretty sure our water has chlorine in it and can kill fish.
sorry about the loss dude. :(

no we've switched from chlorine to some other thing. cantomine or something along those lines. read abt that on some singaporean fish site.

how do your other fish react to this? also, keep in mind the fish you've had may already be adjusted, whereas a new fish may have been shocked by the transition without proper acclimation--

other fish have no problems, but were acclimated properly, as this one was dying in the bag, i quickily dumped it in the tank. this probably killed it eh?

you def. should have taken more precausions in acclimating it. it's so hard to keep your composure when dealing w/ a dying fish though.

i had a gar a few months ago jump out of the tank overnight and nearly get eaten by my cat. i found the fish at about 5 in the morning and just put him back in the tank (gently). all i did is use a bunch of salt and crossed my fingers. that's why i am shocked your fish died. mine was out of the tank for how many ours and was dragged around by my cat. all yours did was fall to the floor and was transported home. that doesnt seem quite as stressful as what mine whent through. can you think of anything else that could have caused this?

p.s. i would suggest using water conditioner in the future.

I have heard many opinions, but in my own, I believe gar are quite tough. I am still skeptic as to what the cause of death really is...As in Jordan's story, there was no telling how long that gar was out of water flopping around. It was missing most of its slim coat and was drug around by the snout by a cat...If this isnt tough and stressful on a fish, I dont know what is...As soon as this fish was put back into the tank, it slowly floated to the bottom to rest, and in about a day was close to being right back to himself with no visible problems.

How long was this gar in your tank before it actually died? was it acting weird right from the minute you put him in there, or did he seem alright, and them get progressively worse?

With the lose of its use of the back fins, can a broken back truly be ruled out as a possible cause of death? An injury such as this, mixed with the stress of being moved and placed into a different tank could all be the resulting death.
