Fishless cycling isn't incompatible with adding media from other tanks. All you were doing by adding feeders was introducing a source of ammonia. All you're doing by adding bottled ammonia is introducing.. Ammonia. When I do a fishless cycle I still use media from other filters - that way your fishless cycle completes even quicker.

As it stands now, I'd raise the temp up another couple degrees until the rays arrive then bring it back to ray temp before tanking them. Use your test kits daily, change water as necessary, and you'll be fine. Prime - assuming this is the dechlorinator you're talking about - doesn't stop a tank cycling.

i always add media from other tanks when doing a fishless cycle. usually only takes me 2 weeks to complete.if i did it from the beginning id be done already. yes prime is a dechlorinator and detoxifies ammonia and nitrite too. like i said im not sure about this add media, add expensive fish method. ammonia can still spike to a point then sometimes daily water changes. i dont like it.

but after 100% water change everything back to 0 and temp at 86 right now. should knock out any remaining ich if there is any within 24 hours.

I would sanitize everything to rid the tank of disease, including the media and filter system. The 100% WC is not enough IMHO to clear the tank of pathogens.

Chinese proverb my parents always tell me:
A good start is half way to a successful finish.

x2, I say you should just scrap everything, who knows what else those feeders brought in. I would even empty the tank and clean every by hand before starting again.

no time tonight to do all that and rays coming in the morning. but i did clean out hob filters. i could add some salt tonight but with the rays coming i dont think thats a good idea. i could wash out the fx5's tonight would that help?

Don't wash it, you're already lacking in BB, the last thing you want is to kill off more bacteria.

ok heres a question about ammonia levels and rays. i know 0 is ideal. lets say after i add my rays to the tank then i add more filter media. 3-4 days go by and the ammo levels are at .25ppm. should i do a 50% water change and add prime?

should i do a water change if i see any ammo ? even if its everyday?

Forget about the salt for now, it makes your situation more complicated. Although salt is a good stress reliever for new rays, its meant to be added over a couple days and with your constant need of water changes right now, it would be very costly on your wallet to add salt to keep the concentration stable. Daily water changes is completely normal, as thats what i am literally doing, everyday, or every one of my tanks. You could always flush your tank with 50% changes 2-3 times a day with a couple hours between each change. You need to get that ammonia out as soon as possible. Forget about using prime to get rid of your ammonia. It doesn't really get rid of it, it just neutralizes it so it somewhat doesnt have an affect on your fish, but its still in your water.

Good luck. Hope you don't get an ammonia spike and wipe out your whole tank.
