HELP! Very sick 12" red devil!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Is the "flakey" stuff all over his body the bacteria growing? I hope its a good sign that he's not on his side anymore. Now he's tilted up towards the waters surface.

I'm hoping that by tomorrow he'll be looking better this 24 hours is the critacal period if the sulfa is going to work. the fact that he stright is a good sign, sometimes they look worse before they turn the corner. Fingers crossed.

Even though water will hold less oxygen, people typically find the increase in growth rate of bacteria will over shadow this effect. Sorry not so active last week or so but the temperature should really be lower...maybe even the low 70s.

I agree with you. I made the wrong call on that. The heater should be unpluged and let the tem drop to ambiant. Sometimes you try and help but not every call is the right one.

well the rest of the calls were right on and since no other responses came in time there fish probably wouldnt have made it this far if you hadnt intervened

OP, the white stuff all over the fish is an affect of the bacteria, it also can show in discoloration of the gills. The white and the gill discoloration are signs fo the illness, meaning as they return to normal your fish is healing, but you can't assume once those signs are gone that its time to stop the treatment. Bacteria like that can be stubborn to finish off.

Aquanero I am very grateful for all your advice! I would have been lost without your help! He does look a bit better. Looks like he regained his balance. When I came to check on him he did swim to the front briefly, something he hasn't done in a few days.

You're welcome he does look a little better. I would have felt terrable if somthing happened because I gave you the wrong information.

Thanks Tomomothy for the explanation.

He is doing a lot better from before. Still not back to normal but looks like he's on the path to recoverying.

Do the meds lose their effectiveness after 24hrs? I wondering why they say to dose every 24hrs.

No problem. As the meds do their job then the effective medicine in the tank will dilute, so thats why you will need to dose every 24 hours. I'm actually not sure if its solely the meds that actually kills the bacteria itself that gets consumed in the process, or if adding it to the tank causes the meds to break down as well, but if you only dose once, it wont kills all the bacteria and some if not all forms of bacteria will become resistant to meds. Thats why its incredibly important to follow the directions of all meds to the T and to continue to dose untill all the bacterias gone, which is usually well after the physical symptoms have healed.
