help! water gone mega cloudy (with video)!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the tank is worse this morning with only a few inches of visbility and all the glass and slate is coated stuff blowing in the current, is this algae???????????

bump, had the day off work as i need to sort this before the fish get effected!

anyone? maybe the algae on the glass is a by product of a bacterial bloom? feel like emptying it right out and starting the tank over.........

the fish are very un comfortable, and at the surface i would say the bacteria/algae what ever it taking all the o2..............

did you put in some last-stage fine mech filtration (pad or floss) in the canister?
If it was me I'd do that to catch the fine stuff, dose tank with seachem stability, and stop messing with your tanks work to balance itself out again- as long as the water is testing good. +make sure there's plenty of aeration.

Might be worth to move the fish to a temporary holding tank and start that tank over. Use some kind of quick cycling liquid like Seachem Stability or API Quickstart or something to restart your tank when everything's cleaned out really well. Make sure you remove those tiles too. Most cichlids are pretty hardy but you may have some casualties. Is your drip system have some kind of pretreatment for chlorine and other chemicals? If not it may have been slowly killing off your beneficial bacteria, thus leading to this breakdown.

IMO, that tank is too heavily stocked to clean & start cycling all over again. he will lose all the fish.
besides, I thought the new drip system is being done with properly treated water.
?

And as koltsixx recommended, lose the charcoal and add more filter Floss and bio-media. If you're not running a sump, I can't imagine how you are getting enough biological filtration in your tank. I would guess that the drip and large water changes killed off what little BB you have and also affected your PH. I don't use charcoal any more, I just make sure to treat my water before it goes into the tank.

for bio-media I use the highly porous seachem matrix. there are so many more places for BB to colonize, I have never had any problems develop after filter cleaning &/or Lg water changes.
it seems that your system is running right "on the edge" of having sufficient BB & the media it can live in.

but for immediate relief, you have to filter out that stuff in the tank water.

right just re tested the water and ph is up to 8.5, nitrites are 0, nitrates are at 20ppm, ammonia is up to 0.25 mg per litre???

i have thought about re starting the tank but i have nowhere for the fish too go...

im running carbon on the drip system but i have turned it off this morning as im sure its where all this started tbh, fresh dechlorinated water is a breeding ground for bacteria especially as my tank has been out of balance for a few weeks anyway so i wont be restarting it until everything has settled..

i dont think its crashed completely though????

i supected being right on the edge, i will get another fx5 asap i think ... how can i filter it out, im at a lose?
