help wheels turning and it hurts!

well I have the green light form the wife, but the weather seems to be against me. rained all morning and lightning even struck near enough to knock out the power to the house 3 times.

so My pond is currently a mud pond and my digging is halted till things dry out. Now I remember why it took me so long to dig the 3300g in the first place. only took a weekend to dig it deeper in summer to 4800g but on the initial dig out it took 7 weeks, i forgot about how often it rained last fall.

you bring up a good point I'll have to take a look and see if I can find any cheap. but I shifted my attention indoor this weekend to my 100g tank. I finally got it setup on a diy stand, my old 55g tank as a wet/dry with a 3 drawer storage bin, 2 pvc overflows, and a 530gph pump return.

I then took down my 10g where the breeding mollies were residing and put them in the 55g it holds about 42g when in operation making the whole system 142g.

now I just need to do some aesthetics on the stand, build a canopy out of an old wood shelf I have laying about and then get a new lighting fixture for it.

on the pond, I haven't estimated the gallons if combined but I really need to think about additional flow and filtration. should I go to chamber filtration and forget about the filter box style? it would be easier to maintain once setup but requires a lot more digging and liner work. what do you guys think?

htfu and get digging

JOKES

lol well as you guys can expect from the lack of posts I hit a snag. my main pond suddenly began draining. now of course you're figuring hole in liner which you are right but could you have guessed the cause?

well as I might have mentioned before my soil is clay so I was confused as to how even a hole in the liner was draining 16" of pond in 3 hours as my soil holds water on it's own.

so temp intex back up all fishes and filters in it and main pond drained (quite a wet yard atm lol.

After taking out the 2 liners I found a nice little hedgehog sized hole leading back to a tunnel which enters a series of tunnels throughout my lawn.

I've seen the mounds and didn't think anything of it but apparently mr. hedgehog (unconfirmed just guessing) decided he was expanding his tunnel system and dug right up next to the pond, penetrated the clay base of the pond, ripped a hole in both liners and then must have either run or drowned. little punk.

so now I have a dilemma both liners ripped, I definitely need a new one but what to do about said hedgehog? I mean should i go concrete? poison the fella and hope it doesn't have any ill effects on the yard or fishes?

at any rate as I did last time I had to drain it, I think i'll be expanding the main pond and this time setting it up to interconnect to the threads original purpose.

sigh I tell you i didn't see this coming lol.

Go big or go home!

You could always just patch the holes in the liner.

yeah But I have 2 20 mil liners and i think I'd be happier with 1 45 mil one. Then i could patch the hole in these liners and use them for the auxiliary/ planted pond.

right now as it stands I have a 18'x9'x4' average depth pond. the plan is to make a solid flat bottom at 5', widen the sides to 10' all the way and got to 20-22' on the length (how tired I am will be the determining there)

This of course means changing up on the pump/filter as well, I thing I'll expand the filter box and get rid of the tubs. just make them lined and then cover them from the elements. this will simplify servicing and grant me far more surface area in the filter.

so i already have a 2000gph and a 3150gph pump. guesstimate on the new pond gallons is 7500-8250 depending on the length change. so maybe keep the 2k gph going for the uv and then get a larger for the filter. then park teh 3150gph for when the auxilary is dug.

fisrt the auto w/c starts draining my salt tank fund, now this depeletes it compeltely lol.

Its so funny how everyone on here is all omg ask your gf/wife first.

I have to ask my fiancee to do anything haha. But me asking him, is more like telling him what I'm doing.

Make that pond huge!
