Hi everyone, this is my first post, i actually registred just today and look forward to learning more and see what other people have in their tanks. Now, I have been taking care of fish at my store for the past year and am good at it. We had one tank that had 3 clownknives and they all got along. The one was older and the other two were young. We sold the adult and I bought the other two. They were in that tank together for 3 or 4 months and had no problems, it was a 15 gallon tank. I have a 46 gallon and now the smaller one is being very terrritoiral over a big log and will attack the other clownknive. I dont understand. I read up on these guys, saw youtube videos with them together. Do I need to buy another log? ANy help would be appreicated cuz I dont want to return the one. Thanks

Fish are instinctive, not smart at all.
When moved, tehy probably stopped recignosing the others and felt threatened.
OR it jsut a conincidence that the age was up it became territorial. maybe it is male and others are also male?
Geting another log would help.
Also breaking line of sight.
I found that cks dont persistently chase another if the tank is big enough - I have 2 large cks, they nipped at the start but ok now, swim past each other... etc, but then again my tank has about 45 fish in it. so theya re also distracted with other fish and probably no time to pay attention to each other.

I probably will get another log. I should've mentioned I also have a tiger shovelnose in their and both of them could care less about the catfish. It seems as long as the bigger clownknive stays far away from the log then the other one doesnt mind him as much. He'll still come close to him but he wont nip him or run into him.

Is the log the only hiding spot in the tank? If it is, then get some more hiding spots for the other. Make sure to rearrange the decor so they can both establish new territories.

thats too small for even 1 clown knife let alone 3. sorry to tell you man but 2 clown knife and a TSN is was too crowded for a 36 gallon. i dont think you can house any of those 3 fishes in a 46 for long. i agree with benz...rearrange the decor and let them have their own spot. i had a clown with a bgk in a 55 gallon and i had to move the clown cause it was starting to beat on the bgk. i will be getting a 112 gallon this saturday and hopefully the clown will be happy there.

thanks for the replies guys. I have a big log with artificial plants and a big tall rock. It turns out withing the last hour, the small clownknive got more aggresive and started chasing the other one around non stop, so I took him back to my store and refunded him. I really didnt want to, I love clownknives. I have a 46gallon not a 36g. BUt right not, both fish are swimming around happily doing their thing and getting along to. In a week, I plan on adding a royal pleco. Is my tank to small for these guys? I know they're grow to be 3-4ft but that's in years....right? Like I said, this is my first personal acquarium with only a year of experience.

ive only started but ive been doing alot of reading/research with little experience from keeping knives(again only a little lol)..my clown grows 1 to 1.5 inch a month. i have had it 2 months and its already grown from 5 to 8 inches. dont know anything about tsn but i know they get up to 4 feet. i keep reading on this forum about people always saying that their tsn/rtc are always outgrowing their tank and eventually moving them out to a pond.

Oh ok so wait.. are you down to one CK now? They can grow pretty fast depending on what you're feeding them. I have 2 CK's about 18in. They started off in my 55 gallon less than two years ago. Had to upgrade them within the first year. Their growth slowed down a bit around 15-16 inches. I'm shocked they haven't outgrown your 46 gallon yet. Perhaps you could post some pics! :)

nice. I'm hosting a knife in a 40 gallon awaiting the new 110 and then to the 500 er 600 gallon pond!

They will be territorial but as long as both of them have a hiding spot, they will be fine. Also, watch out. They take big mouthfuls. My CK took a half a tail off a ID shark!
