help with 30 gal reef tank. please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well its 30 for each hole they drill so thats def worth it. the bulk heads i will check out lowes or home depot and see what they have.
but the biggest cost is the overflow kit. and the box. its pretty easy to make a box right?

Great products and great guys
I second this. Great products. I am using their 700gph overflow on my 75.

update!
found the sand :) dry argonite. it comes in 50 lb bags for 50 bucks the guy
thats not a bad price.
said a 40 breeder would prob need 2 bags to get a decent sand bed.
LULZ... 160 lbs gives me 4-5 inches on my 75 gallon.
also im goin with a 4 bulb 36 in t5 fixture and a rio 1400 for the pump.
sounds good on lighting. Only thing I have to say is that rios like to over heat and spill their guts into the aqaurium.
also the lfs store i found yesterday can set up th ecomplete over flow for about 200 with box and bulk heads with a drain and return hole.
do you guys think i should just do a drain hole and have a hang on back return?
That sounds really expensive IMO. I am doing a through the glass return as well, but there is no added benefit from it (im doing it because I made a boo boo....). An over the back return is sufficient.
thats all i got so far.

no progress yet. went fishin this weekened and cut my foot open pretty good on some old fence panel :( and then my battery went out on my truck.... i love life. but once i get healed and get these batteries i will keep yall posted. thanks for alll the help guys. this is the way this site should be!
i will check out gl*******s and see what i can find. thanks again guys
one quick question.... would a metal halide be overkill for this tank? i know a guy that i can get the everythin but the balast for 40 bucks. its an insane deal thats why im asking

Ballast is the most expensive part...that being said $40 still sounds pretty good for everything else (bulb, reflector).

Some people do crazy things with MH (wpg wise...dont get on my case) but they are pretty experienced and are doing it for sps.

the only thing that is pushing me away from them is the heat. i would hang them up above the tank but then my whole room is lit up. i love the look of them and would love to be able to get basically anythin if i wanted it like clams and stuff.
do you think its worth it? i can get a ballast for 100. so thats about 150 for MH and 250 for 4 t5s, what would you get?

If you want clams in a 30...I would do MH. Who knows what your temps are gunna be like though...

I have a 150w MH on my 30 and the temps could be better. I have 4 pc fans pushing air across inbetween the MH and the top of the tank. It helps, quite a bit. I have corals in their right now and they dont seem to mind, and neither do the fish. But it wouldnt take much, like the a/c out on a warm day, to nuke the tank.

ya and this is a 40 b and the fixture i would get is 2 150w MH
i will just go with t5s i guess.
do you like your MHs? other than heat and efficeintcy is there other cons to them?

No other cons that I can think of really.
