I could really use some help with my new plans.

Im gonna buy 4-5 endlicheri next week, thing is that we cant find them bigger than 2,4 inches in sweden so thats the size im gonna get.

What i have planned is 2 use my 11gallon mini tank 2 feed them up to about 4,7 inches then let them grow in my 30g tank untill they are big enough for my 120g predator tank.

Im gonna have a small pump in the 11g thats perfekt for the job (iv'e done exacly this on small gars and snakeheads before in my 11g)

Im gonna feed quite heavily so i was thinking about changing 20% water everyday or everyother day. The water refill will come from my 120g tank so the good bakteria n water quality is used instead of tapwater. Temp 27C

Should i use sand? should i have hiding places or just blank, no sand n nothing?

Im kinda new with baby Bichirs so i have no idea bout how sensetive they are, what they can take and not.

So is there anything special i need 2 know or think of ? is 20% everday 2 much 2 change, can it harm them? What should i feed them with? should i feed once a day or twice? is 27C right temperatur?

I want them 2 grow fast of course but i've heard that they can get all F**- up if u feed 2 much so... help ?? :)

I really love endlicheri, and i've wanted 2 do this for a very long time so plz guys, give me all the help you can.

btw, information bout how fast they grow would be awsome so i get a picture of how long its gonna take.

Peace

BTW, shortbody n other "defekts" are they genetical or due 2 overfeeding, bad water quality n stuff? Thing is that many get defekt endlicheri in sweden.. Overfarmed fish?

hmm there are plenty of information in the forum which you could look at and check out stickies also, as for pictures, look at media lounge sections...
you don't have to worry about 20% water chance, as long as you always maintain the water quality, the temperature you mentioned is fine, just keep it within that range,
young endli will grow really fast, a 120g may just be enough for 4-5 endli in the future, but bigger is always better,
shortbody is resulted in bad genes from many generations of breeding, other variation like a deform body, albino, longfinned, n platinum are also possible.

Hi garniac i'd like to voice my opinion on shortbodies bichirs be it endlicheris, senegalus or dels.
Shortbodied endlis actually fetch a far far higher price in the whole of asia as they look really awesome and are pretty hard to acquire around here.
and by shortbody i do not mean bichirs with crooked bodies and deformed features. True short bodied bichirs are truly a sight to behold.

Especially a shortbodied endlicheri with external gills :naughty:

Hey and remember to keep your pH between 6-8 and no higher than 8.
and remove the food once the babies are full.
Juvenile bichir tend to eat too much and spit out the rest of the food especially if you are feeding them pellets.

Thx for the information guys. I've read allot just after i created this thread so i found a great amount of information but not specifik info regarding juveniles and the best way to keep em.

Garniac i have plans for a 300G in the near future so space wont be an issue :)

Tomio really? well i can imagine that non chrooked specimens are wanted by many but the specimens i've seen under the name "shortbody" are very offen crooked :( one of my m8's offered me his crooked SB last night but im not sure if i want 2 take it or not, i will just feel sorry for it when i look at it u know. It has this really huge bump on its back.. Maybe ill take him anyway and try 2 give him a decent life we will see.

I Still have a few unanswered questions that mainly are the need of rekomendations from u guys.

So
1, should i have sand and other stuff in the 11G or should i just have it blank, i know that no substrate means easy cleanup of uneaten food n waste but how about hidingplaces, will they get 2 stressed without it?
2, how offen should i feed em, do you guys agree with the under 7" feed em as much as they can eat "rule" 2-3 times a day ? This wont risk their health and enhance the risk for them 2 become defekt?
3, i've got this far, i will feed em with pellets, bloodworms, artemia, shrimp and fish. Somethin else u guys rekomend?

And then a bit of a offtopic question but i just need 2 understand this because i always get different answers. Bichirs get deformed and crooked because genetical issues or very poor konditions - not because of over feeding them ?? or can overfeeding also make em deformed?

Thx

1. 11g is pretty small but it would be good to have some substrate. you dont need thick level of subtrate. just thin layer able to layer out the floor of the tank. 0.5cm more than enough. Good filtration very important.
2. 2 times a day for juveniles IMHO.
3. Thats quite a good diet there.

Feeding will not cause them to be deformed but it can cause dropsy which is very troublesome to cure. :)

Thx for the answers m8

Woow are u serious? the external gils are still on ?? :D thats a sick looking fish man, i want one

I just came back from my lfs.

We made a nice deal.. the sad thing is that none of the specimens im gonna get next week are WC, they are CB :( so i really hope they aint in bad shape and that they aren't over CB with defekts and bad colloration.

Here is the list of whats 2 come next week -all in size 2,4 to 3":

5, endlicheri
2, delhezi
2, albino senegalus

Im still gonna use the 11g tank but just for a short while untill ive cleared out the 30g from its inhabitans (3 channa pulchra n some more fish).

Btw, i got them all for 150euro, good deal or would it be cheeper in the states?

Anyways, i feel kinda good right now :) i already have a nice sized endlicheri, a big lapredei, 3 large senegalus and a big ansorgii so with these new ones and my plans for a 300g tank its all good :)
