help with black aro....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
after the 6 or 7 days are up, and if he is lookin good, i would start doing a 10 to 15% water change every day. after that keep an eye on ur parameters. then lower waterchanges to ur weekly routine.

two days ago you had a rise in ammonia, this then leads to a rise in nitrites.
Is this amount if nitrites dangerous? To get rid of them should I do water changes in small increments, or large?

You can treat with "prime" water conditioner this will detoxify the ammonia and nitrites. If you are unable to treat with prime I would do a couple of 50% water changes(1 per day) and then daily 30% changes until you are positive your tank is done going through the mini cycle it is going through.

I am assuming your tank was completely cycled before the current problems?

Yes it was completely cycled, If I dont have "prime" can i supplement with "stress coat"? thats what i use after water changes.

Read the directions on the stress coat, does it say anything about detoxifying ammonia or nitrites? If it does then use it. If not do water changes, you will want to keep both amonia and nitrites under .25 ppm. I would test the water daily until the problem is under control.

Which tank are we working with, the 120g or the 55g? What are the tankmates, if any?

Its in the 120 wide, I was totally convinced that there was an issue with the filtration in the 55, so I moved him. tank mates are a indo dat, giraffe cat, and a common pleco. he is the largest fish in the tank by 50%, and he's almost 10inches.
Also stress coat says lowers ammo, but nothing on nitrites.

Well good you don't have a heavy stock, I would just keep checking water params and doing the water changes needed to keep ammonia and nitrite levels down(below .25 ppm) Within a week or so your tank should be back to fully cycled.

And don't overfeed, uneaten food will breakdown into ammonia.

exactlly what I was thinking.....i was feeding them yesterday and noticed that my dat is possibly the greediest fish I have ever had.... he races to eat as much food as he can fit into his tiny body, then goes to hide.... about an hour later i was checking out the aro and I noticed the dat in the bottom corner of the tank all of the sudden he just spit out/threwup half the food he ate.... Now I will be much more careful when feeding. I am trying to feed the aro by hand, to make sure the dat doesnt eat all his food he eats. then putting just enough for the dat to consume in about 30 seconds.... hopefully this will help keeping water clean and prestine....
My aro is almost 10inches and eats 6-8 aro stix 2-3 times daily. I admit that this is his main diet, but will go to the LFS and get some frozen food, and some crickets once a week. What are some good frozen foods to give...that are high in nutrients?

Feed the Arow freeze dried krill.
As for the water. Do not add any chemicals. Let the tank self adjust. Do some smaller water changer(25%).
