help with dither fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats what i was thinking from the beginning, never had dithers but don't like how plain and boring the tank is with just the few cichlids. they don't hide but they don't really swim much, just kinda sit suspended in different areas of the tank. i plan on building a big tank so thats why i was thinking of going with dithers now that why they can all be moved later and will hopefully have a beautiful active tank in the end

i had never thought about dithers before but i don't like how boring the tank is lol i love my fish and they look great, but most of the time they just sit suspended in different parts of the tank, they don't really swim around much. and i do plan on building a bigger tank, so thought i would get everyone's opinion on dithers since my first attempt failed. that way when i get the bigger tank done, i can have a beautiful and active tank, just my thinking anyway

Myleus Schomburkii or Rubripinnis. You dont need another colorful fish just sommething that will difuse the aggression. These sillver jewels are awesome in a small shoal. They dont need flashy colors cause theyre in consant motion. When they grow they will show you alot of color. Easy to maintain and will pick up any food your cichlids leave behind. Remember the fish you are keeping are aggressive and the choices you have with dither fish are limited. I have them in all the cichlid tanks I keep. Every time I walk into my LFS and theres a new Myleus Ill pick it up and add it to the school. Transition is effortless. They are immedietly accepted and you dont have to worry all day about comming home to another ripped up fish in your tank. Good luck Monsta!

hi everyone. so i decided i wanted to add some dither fish to my cichlid grow out tank but am having trouble figuring out what to get. i tried a group of Buenos Aires Tetras but within 10 minutes 3 didn't have tails left and the others were hiding. in the tank i have a EBJD, JD, GT, Texas, and a firemouth. all are between 2-3 inches except the EBJD is about 4 inches. anyone have any suggestions as to what would be a good fit?

I'm kinda confused why you want dither fish anyways? Just about any fish that schoal are gonna be a snack...sooner or later. I mean you already have 5 cichilds in your tank. Dithers are meant to bring a reluctant and timid fish out of hiding, and lively up the aquarium. I don't presume that all of your fish are hiding? I guess if you must get a dither, I'd probably go with a handful of giant danios. But in time, they will be eaten.

Dither fish are fish that swim in the open to draw shy cichlids out of hiding. It sounds like you just want fish to swim in the water column to fill the empty space. IDK if your tank is big enough for a school of silver dollars plus your current stock but but they might work. Rainbow fish are good but they are pretty expensive.

By the way I would really watch that EBJD as you fish mature. I hear they can be quite fragile.
