For christmas Im getting a filter for my 75g, (I think aquaclear 110) and I want get it running so it can cycle. However I won't be filling up the 75 for a few days, so can I run the aquaclear on my 20 long to start collecting bacteria? and should I run the 20 long's filter or just one?

If you take the established filter off the 20g you will have an uncycled tank, even if you put the AC110 on the 20g. Best bet would be to just soak the biomax in the 20g tank until you need the AC110 running.

Yep, or put both filters on the tank and see how fast your fish can swim.

ok, the 20g's filter has two sponges for collecting bacteria. Should I just remove one?

No just leave the 20g filter as it is. When you get the new AC110 take the biomax and put it in your 20g tank. Depending on how long it will be until you plan on using the AC110 the biomax will start developing a colony of bacteria on it. If you are planning on using the AC110 right away then do as suggested and move some of the 20g media to the AC110.

what kind of filter is it?

if all it has are 2 sponges, removing one (potentially 50% of the bacteria) might send your tank into a mini cycle. it shouldnt harm anything, but it will be cloudy, and you will want to do some WC. but this will work.

when your 75 is running, put on the ac110, and throw one of the sponges from the 20g filter into the ac110. you will still need to cycle your tank, but it will speed it up . just keep feeding it ammonia and testing it until its ready.

it's an internal filter on the 20g, it works fine with only 2 fish in the tank. I'll probably upgrade if I ever get more.

So here's the plan:
1) Throw biomax from ac110 into 20 long
2) Once I get the tank setup, put the biomax in the filter and put one of the two sponges in the ac110
3) Feed liquid ammonia until cycled

Sound good?
