Help with filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
get a large Tupperware/Rubbermaid/bucket/tub Etc etc.. fill it with water and pure ammonia. also seed it with existing media from other filters and use Seachem stability.. it should take a little under 2 weeks to completely cycle. i did this with my 56 gallon set up with 2 AC110s, it was a 100% success, it took me 11 days.

u can usually find pure ammonia anywhere that sells cleaning materials. its also ridiculously cheap!! i bought a 1 gallon jug for $2.49.. 1 gallon of ammonia will last me my entire life.. i used not even 50ml throughout the whole cycle.

Edit: or use the 20 if there's no fish in it..

that works too. basically like setting up a makeshift tank to cycle your filter while you wait to set up the new tank.
good idea.

you dont need to put the bio-max in the 20L.
remember, your tank will only house enough bacteria to balance the tank. unless youre adding more fish, you will not be growing any more bacteria simply by adding more media to your current filter.

Why not seed the biomax? You think that the bacteria will only grow on those sponges and that without any more bioload there is no possible way for any bacteria to grow on the biomax.

Did you add any form of oxygen while doing this or was the supplied surface area enough?

the duel AC110's supplied enough oxygen.

 You actually ran the two filters. When you stated Tupperware I was thinking you may have just soaked the media with ammonia. I was not thinking Tupperware made anything large enough for a pair of ACs.

Good idea though.

ok,I have the biomax in my 20g. When I get the substrate I'll fill the tank, run the filter, and add pure ammonia.

Sounds like a good plan.
