Help with Ich PLEASE!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The 3 ppt salinity is the "minimum to kill ich".
50 tsps is still about 1/3rd to little, to actually do the job for 25 gallons, especially on a heavy case.
Ich is a tough parasite, with a tough outer cell membrane, and what you are trying to do with the salt, is create enough osmotic pressure to make their outer cell membrane implode. Even a few tsps too little and most will escape the implosion, 25 less is like giving them a scratch.
I’ve run out of salt. Can I buy some from the grocery store or must it be aquarium salt? I know I can’t use any regular table salt but I forgot what kind I can get away with. My car is in the shop and the only store I can get to is the grocery store.

You can buy some at the hardware store, whenever I have had to treat for ich , I get 50lb bags from Home Depot ($5 each).
When I treat, its usually 300 gallons at a time, because I have 3-5tanks on a sump, and if its in one tank, its in all 5.

Water softener salt, sidewalk salt, is all the same as long as its salt (NaCl) , not some other ice melt compound.

Gotcha. Just bought some. Thanks for the help!

How do you usually add it? Dilute it in water then pour?

I want a big bang right away to shock any emerging ich, so I drop 10 lbs right in the sump, if you have hang on the back filters you can weigh out the correct amount and fill the filter adding more as it dissolves.

Unless you get ich under control, the fish will die anyway, so what have you got to loose by tap dancing around the issue.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Unless I fix something they’ll die anyway so I have nothing to lose. The ich is finally falling off and the fish look really beat up. Should I just continue to treat with a heavy dose of salt and do my normal water changes? Or should I go back to meds since the ich has fallen off and will soon be vulnerable? I’m thinking salt because it may also give the battered fish some relief.

Update: I loss 1 acara cichlid, but it seems as though I may be in the clear now. No more visible signs of ich or heavy breathing for the past few days. Fish are acting normal and my tank boss (green terror) is being the bully he was before instead of sitting on the bottom of the tank. He was the last to eat and I finally got him to eat yesterday so I’m excited about that. I think I’ll keep treating with salt and water changes for the next week or so before I take stop adding salt. Thanks everyone for the help!
