Help with oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You've hardly had the fish 24 hrs. It's completely normal for new fish to adjust to their new environment. Don't worry about it not eating at this time. That natural light from the window looks to be quite bright, and you've got light substrate too, which heightens the light. I'd just keep the lights off/low and observe for the next few days. It'll come round in time.

Thanks guys, I'll go to buy some cave or anything I can find for him to hide. BTW, he ate now! Gave him back the carnivore pellet and he gobbled it up fast! Good sign yeah?

Thanks! Yes it's been only 24hrs. but his behavior threw me off guard, I see now they can be moody and sulk like everyone said. This being my first monster fish (I have lots of small fish community tanks) it caught me off guard.

Would you say they preffer dark substrate? I'll keep it in mind for when I set up his 75g next week.

Give him a few days to settle in. Like others have said get him a place to hide. Surprisingly this works well, a place he can hide out in and come out when comfortable. Maybe some floating plants fake or real can help as well to give him cover.
Even adults pout when they feel the need. My O Toni was pouting here for days because I changed the hardscape

Guys he's so much better! He's eating now and swimming normally. I gave him some Tropical South American line and he's back to life! He's now swimming normally all over the place. I guess food makes everyone happy eh? :D

By the way what kind of oscar is he? Tiger albino? I see his marks are light golden, or is it paleness from the stress? Will they turn orange? Either way it's fine, I just wonder.

Thank you all for the help, sorry if I was too paranoid, first monster fish ever lol.

So let's set something straight from the get go. Not all white Oscar's are a true albino. It has to have the red eyes to be a true albino. If it has black eyes then its considered a Lutino. This is all the white skinned Oscar's with black eyes, be it Tigers, Reds, etc.

Also a Oscar the size of yours won't tell you its adult looks besides if it's a tiger or solid.
Yours looks to be a tiger.
So this is what I started with.

Six spots or so on each side turned Into this

Oh wow what a transformation, he's beautiful! How long did it took for your oscar to get to that size?

Oscar's are one of the fastest growing fish in the hobby. If kept in good water and feed good food will grow an inch a month for the first 10 months or so.
You saw what I started with.

This is 6 months of growth right around 7in

And at the 1 year mark around 11in mark

I gave her to a fellow MFK member and she is pushing past 12in plus in a 200gal tank by herself save a catfish or two

Food and interaction. Oscars are people fish. Make sure you include vegies as it grows up.

Super beautiful fish, I've been wanting a bigger, mosnter fish for quite a while now and Oscars are the first one I thought of, they're so beautiful and look like water dogs lol. Their color is amazing as well. I've been waiting for my local petco/fish stores to stock one, and I've always wanted a white, but they rarely got any, and most of the time were always black ones. So when I saw this one (last one remaining) I had to snag it quick! What pellet/fish food did you feed yours? He looks super healthy so obviously you did everything good!

Will do! Any suggestions on veggies and pellet brands?

Toni was feed Hikari Cichlid Gold. Around 6 inches or so switched up to Hikari Carnisticks. Soon after switched to Hikari Jumbo Carnisticks. At about the 5 month mark I gave her a couple freeze dried krill per meal to help the orange pop more.

Here she is prior to krill every meal
