Only positive that comes out of this is that it opens up a large tank and i'll now be able to keep my 12" bullhead cat that I was planning to return to the wild in the summer!

I like the idea of a freed up tank, but I am nearly positive that there are laws against returning a wild caught fish to the wild after being kept in captivity. You may want to check the local laws where you live.

We have a large irrigation pond on our property that he'll eventually live out his days in so i'm good right? Guess that's not really returning him to the "wild"

As long as there is no connection to other water ways, I don't see any harm, although I think others might disagree.

Hmmm...never really thought it would be an issue. People have ponds for they're all over this forum. I don't see the difference just because mine is already there and doesn't need to be dug or built. If anything IMO its better because it's an already developed eco-system where he could be with others of his kind. If I'm wrong, please do let me know as I will make the proper accommodation for him.

Sounds like you did a great job bringing them back from the brink and have been taking good care of them since.

I have had several EBJD's and they never survived long for me. Your picture looks like one I lost a few years back.

Its not you its them, the color morph is great but comes with a weakened constitution. Breeding is a factor but, I believe the research and genetics that has been done along with my practical experience, both of which strongly suggests that, physiologically, these fish are inferior. Great color and calmer but not as strong as the native JD. Several of us have had similar experiences.

I know this does not make up for your struggle but I just wanted to you to know that its not your fault. All you can do is your best

Peace Man

I agree 100%. The only reason I can see that it would be bad to re-release a fish into the wild is there is a chance it could carry something from your tank that isn't where it lives. But, as you said, it's a private, land-locked pond.

As long as the pond is in your property and not connected to any other waterway it will be fine. The problem is when you release exotic fish, or native fish that might be infected with exotic pathogens for which other local fish have no defenses. If it belongs to you and there's no way for the fish to escape, it's not the "wild".
