HELP WITH STOCK PLEASE

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
trick here i guess is buy them all young together so they all grow up and get used to eachother and its not like a new fish gets added to the soup later once its established... also dont buy pairs of the same type (RD, JD, GT) so they cant go into nesting / breeding mode when mature... then its got a better chance of working.

fill the rest of the tanks levels with other SA / CA fish... theres some great catfish for a 6X2X2 aswell as some shoalers like silver dollars and some of the larger barbs and big characins

ok thank you for that information im starting to get the idea., its just i keep aussie natives which are extremly aggressive jardini's, mangrove jacks, murray cods, sooty grunters.. but ive kept them all together with no problems so you know how people say you cant do this you cant do that etc etc im just seeing if these fish are really like that., ok so i will clarify my question now,. i want a tank with big confident personable colourful fish. id rather have a couple of fish then just 1 but im open for all options thanks for all the help!!:)

can you keep terrors or jags in groups? maybe 4-5? or is that a big no?

Not in a 6' tank. Someone would kill a few other someones. I know 180 gallons sounds like a lot but to SA/CA it's really not beacuse most of them get over a foot long. GT's usually stay under a foot but they're real thick fish.
I've never kept a Jaguar because when I read up on them most the reliable sites said they get to about 18". Even 2 of those would get cramped in a 6' tank. The best setup for SA/CA's is to pick your favorite kind of fish (or 2) and center the tank around them. Get dithers like Silver Dollars to help clean up and to divert their attention away from each other, get a catfish or 2 if small enough and maybe some Loaches, something like that. If you try to cram in a bunch of SA/CA cichlids like they do with Africans you'll just end up with a bunch of dead fish. All my opinion :-)

I have a tank which people 3 years ago said wouldbnt work... and a few of the fish had to be rehomed (due to aggresion) but essentially its a very successfull biotope ;)
so i know where you coming from...

My best advice will be to get them all small and grow them up together... every cichlid no matter what species will have its own personality and either be a mean mofo or a gentle giant... then you can weed out the trouble makers at an early stage to have some good looking brutes eventually without too much hassle.

good luck with it dude :)

I have kept alot of australian natives and arowana's. but i now have a tank 6x2x2 full of african cichlids im going to trade them in and try out sa ca cichlids instead what i thought was

2x (m/f) green terrors
3x jaguars
2x jack dempsys
2x red devils
2x texas cichlids

i like lots of colours large size's and aggression ( i like it when they come up to you in the tank ) personable fish are ones i like., im sorry but im a real noob with sa/ca cichlids please any information will help me alot thanks!!!

I would get one of each of the fish you have listed. And be prepared with a back up plan when all hell breaks loose

far out.... there are just to many fish i want to keep.. maybe you guys could give me your opinion., so 6x2x2

sa/ca cichlids
birchers and knifes
murray cod
mangrove jack

ohh so many thing i could do... far out im just a confused mess thanks for all the help though MFK is just such a great place to learn

personally i would go with knives i have 2 bgks and i love them. they are amazing and full of peronality.

ok sorry going of topic now those look great!! probly cant get them in australia... cant get anything over here unless you know triads...... stupid laws.. can you keep a green terror pair or single in a 3x1x1.5 for life?

Hard to advise when you don't know what you want mate.

If you do go SA/CA as advised try 1 of each of the species you like but be prepared to rehome or move on fish that are overly aggro. Purchase as juvies and allow to grow up together and that may stop some problems but with cichlids nothing is guaranteed.

Thats why we love them !!!
