I've designed all my tanks to be low tech with the only need being feedings, dosing of fertilizer once every 3 weeks plus a water change every 2 weeks.

More than likely... Absolutely no reason to feed your fish live fish.

Like I said, I do 50% weekly WC (actually more like 75%), so I can leave them for quite some time & could even got a week or more w/o feeding. That's just the FW tanks though. SW ones, need to at least be topped off daily.

everyone servived the night, they were not to interested in food this morning but that was expected, how long should i maintain the ".02% salinity" level and what is the most accurate way to measure it?

Pufferpunk ...lighten up!

aubicon we talked about the feeders in the other thread, get a hydrometer from an LFS that sells S/W fish, under $10.

3 teaspoons of aquarium salt per gallon of water (dissolve before adding), and check salinity and hour after each W/C and correct accordingly.

And if you just send pufferpunk an invoice for that 5oog tank I'm sure she would be happy to pitch-in 80% for the sake of the fish.

:ROFL:Just ahd a mental image of a 4"Pacu and 6 3"Oscars in a 500g tank!, funny 'cause it took so long to find them!:ROFL::ROFL:

If you stare at the Pacu you can actually see it grow tho. :D

Raise the W/C's but only to 35% max with these small fish.

Ich goes thru a cycle and can only be killed during the tomite stage and only last about three days.

Joe, What do you think the fellow is going to need for 6 oscars, a pacu, 2 Dempseys, a minimum of 3 balas & whatever other fish he has? What was he thinking he'd have to upgrade to? Actually, now that I'm adding it up, 500g wouldn't even be large enough for all these fish as adults!

Personally, I think 1tbsp/g is a bit much for ich treatment.

the word of the day is up grade, would you really start baby fish out in a 500g tank? its easier to argue for a larger tank when you actually need one. from now on i will put all feeders in quarantine before hand. thanks to everone who had helpful, info you guys are great.

I'm happy to hear you plan to upgrade soon!

Although puffer punk is right in that ur current stock will need a decent pond much sooner than you would believe! She is wrong in that even these fish would not cause a crash at their current size. On the other hand if you feed only live and you have dead carcuses rottening in your tank then its no suprise you have Ich. I feed live from time to time but only from madisons nices LFS and I always make sure to removed the dead quickly.
