At work today I had a lady come in with some questions about her green iguanna she had had 2 but one just died this morning and wanted to know what was wrong with it. So it sounds like to me it has MBD it has the swollen jaw and rubbery bones in its legs. She is keeping it in a 10 gallon fish aquarium no heat not UV and it is on sand. To make a long story short she couldnt afford to buy anything for it so she is going to be bringing it in to me after work tomorrow. She said it is about 4 inches long not counting tail. I need to know everything I possibly can on what to do. For the time being I am going to have to put it in a 29 gallon because I dont want to put it near my other reptiles unti it passes its quaratine it is going to be in there then an upgrade. I have the UV and heating, perches and all of that kind of stuff I just need to know care requirements and how to treat it for the MBD and there isnt a herp vet anywhere near where I live so I am gonna kinda have to do this myself which is stressful since i dont want to further hurt this little guy. I can get liquid calcium and vitamins if I need to use it I just need instructions on how to use them. Also what kind of substrate would all of you recommend I was thinking newspaper for the time being so I can keep an eye on its stools and to prevent impaction which it already may have from the sand. Any help is very much appreciated I just want to get this poor guy comfortable and healthy if possible. Thank you so much in advance.

iguanas are pretty hardy so he should bounce back. it wont be an over night change but he will deff. get better.

i would set him up with a basking spot around 105 to start off. and keep the cool end around 75-80. line the bottom of the cage with paper towels, make sure you mist him multiple times a day to keep the humidity up. that 29 will last but not for to long. maybe a month or two and you really need to upgrade after that.
make sure you feed him real good leafy greens collard, kale, endive, danelion, mustards ect. NO lettuce at all, there is no nutritional value at all and it will only make him worse. add in veggies to carrots, squash, bell peppers and so on. try using colors if he is stuborn to eat. fruits feed sparingly at first since they are high in phosphorus.
make sure you add vitamins and calcium with EVERY feeding at first. eventually you can go down to using your multi vitamin 4-5 times a week. i use calcium with and without vit. D3, i ussually swap off every other feeding. make sure you spray down his food after so he stays hydrated, as he may not drink from a bowl.
as far as not having a vet its not the ideal situation to be in but it can be done. you may not need the liquid calcium. depends on how bad he is. get some pics when you can.

hope that helped

Mike

Thanks for the info I am I know the 29 wont last very long I just dont want him to give anything to my herps b/c from what it sounds like the lady I am getting it from was "rescuing" it she said they had it in a fish bowl covered in feces feeding it icberg lettuce. So who knows what he could potentially have. I got the greens for everyone else so I think I have everythiny. Any other things I may possible need? I will try and get some pics up tom. after I get him if not I will be sure to due it monday. Once again thanks for the help.

Here´s a great site;) http://www.greenigsociety.org/ It will give you more stuff on both the diet, condicions and the hillness. Complementing what Mike already said Ill say that at the same time your doing the stuff on the cage and diet, you should, when ever possible give him outdoor sun baths, it will give him a big boost on both the physical and psicological areas. You put him in like a bird cage you may have around and keep him under close wach (if you see him freaking out or opening its mouth its time to go inside again, they tend to overheat quicly). Ive reabilitated my fare share of MBD igs and most recovered, will however likely take a mouth untill you see dramatic changes and one more untill allmost full recovery. Good luck:thumbsup:

And I would love to take it outside but the temperature has been all over the place lately I think later this week it is supposed to get around 70 F(21 C) would that be too cold? I am glad there is a good chance he will recover I just feel so horrible for him.
