HELP!!!!! Our puffer fish doesnt look good. His black spots are fading and his belly looks black. Does anyone know what's wrong??! I tested the water and its fine and all of the other fish are ok! I just tried to feed him and he isnt eating...it just looks like his color is fading...????!!!

I hate the word "fine" lol, what does that mean? The fact you have "other fish" could be indicative of the problem, I'm guessing you're not keeping it in brackish water? We need more info...

umm of course I''m keeping it in brackish water...i didn't even know that cichlids could survive in anything BUT brackish water. "Fine", meaning the pH is around 8.2 and ammonia, nitrites are at 0. The nitrates are a little elevated, around 40ppm, but we have been having this problem for a while now and I can't seem to get them down. We just did a 30% water change 2 days ago. The other fish are eating well and acting normal. I'm just concerned bc it seems that the puffers color is fading...it just looks very dull.

A puffer is not a cichlid. What are your other fish I hope there not cichlids.

40 ppm of Nitrates are no big deal. There are only a few species of cichlids that live in brackish, namely the Asian chromides. Virtually all cichlids are freshwater...what's your salinity?

jack dempsey, acei, peacock, frontosa, hybrid zebra catfish and the puffer Do you think there's something wrong with the puffer? I use cichlid lake salt...that's what the store gave us when we first set up our tank and had told them the fish we were planning on getting.

Most puffers need brackish water. I should have asked, but with your description I assume it's a green spotted puffer?

You don't have a brackish tank. Cichlid Lake salt isn't the same thing as marine salt, it is a mineral buffering salt. I'm terrible at chemistry, so here's a link that explains it better. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-63579.html

Do you know the specific gravity or salinity of your water?

For saltwater/brakish setups you need to measure the salinity, for less then $10 pick up a Hydrometer for this.

Looks like this....

And as Simon mentioned, aquarium salt isn't correct what you need is marine salt like Instant Ocean.

Do you know what kind of puffer you have?
Sounds like you may have been given some inaccurate information.
None of the cichlids or catfish you mention should be kept in brackish water... some fishkeepers prefer to have a bit of aquarium salt in the water, but this does not make the tank "brackish".
The puffer may need to be moved to a truly brackish tank, depending on what species you have.
