Hephaestus Carbo - Aka: "COAL GRUNTER", "Black Grunter", Grunter Perch"

Anybody have or keep this fish?? Thinking of picking up a couple...
hardy fish?... (as juvie?) growth rate? temperment? etc.? Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks in advance?

Havent kept them . They look mighty cool though ! Anybody have any tips for this bad boy?

They're Australian Fishes if I'm not mistaken.... Very nice fishes.

Ive kept these species before.

They are tough as hell and can have a bit of an attitude problem.

I cant really say how tough they are as juvies as I purchased mine as an adult but I imagine they would be quite hardy.

All up they are a pretty cool fish to keep. There are also some other grunters that are very cool that you could consider keeping.

Steeve_89, what size did you get your adult coal grunter at? And for how much? What were you feeding?

Do you know if they usually are carriers of parasites (internal)? Max size attained in captivity? TIA!

My fellow was about 20cm and I fed him on feeders, pellets and beefheart.

I forget how much I got my guy for as it was a long time ago. (When I just started in hobby) and I kept them with some gudgeons.

As for the parasites, I have no idea sorry.

I think the max size obtained in aquaria would be somewhere around 30cm, maybe a little bigger. 30cm is considered big for this specie of grunter. Compared to other grunters they are small.

Unfortunaly my guy died from a bad batch of feeders

I've been lookin into buying these guys aswell, they dont grow too big but are a very nice adult specimen - and yes they are Aus native

What's the going price for 2-3" Coal grunters, anyways? Think I remember seeing Wes (Rare Fish) having them up for sale awhile ago??
