Hepsetus Odoe: Growout

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are so much thicker now, it's soon pictures O'clock :D
I work this weekend, so maybe I'll find a moment to update them!

I do from time to time, pellets are too big IMO.
They dart to it, see what it is, and dart right back away, only accepting fish filet.

Pre soak Hikari sinking carnivore pellets. Then toss the soft pellets in. Right size, right consistency. Better nutrition.
Good luck!

It's pretty hard to find Hikaris in Belgium, I have to order them from the UK.
I have Massivores left (My aro finished the bag of floating before I had to part with it), and they're pretty big compared to them, perhaps throw in pre-soaked pieces could work, i'll give it a go. :)

While I think of it and have your attention, HarleyK HarleyK , I have been told and read everywhere here that Odoes are skittish, to the point of rushing into glass and dying from it...

I have 5 of them, and while they don't school, they stay all on the one half of the 180 (Sometimes one or two get "lost" on the other, more green side). The ONLY time they get skittish is when I put the first piece of cut up fish into the tank, and they see my hand, they dart right back but don't freak out or anything, just realize, go "Oh shi-!" and move back to where they were.

Is it the "pack" effect? i'm really pleased with that, and with them in general. :)

Yours are still small. It's a fun phase, enjoy it.
They're totally cool as fry, though a bit more shy than let's say lifebearers' fry. They are curious and outgoing up to 4''. Then they get increasingly skittish, which peaks around 7''. They calm down when they're around 2 years old.

Thank you!
I will be sure to observe those changes. :)

Ery ery that's with them is a bit of a pain in my bottom, if I don't target feed him first, he'll chase whomever gets a piece of fish. he never catches them but yeah...

He keeps everyone at bay, but he will eventually have to go, I doubt the Odoes who are going to grow much larger than him will accept his behavior for very long. ;)

I dint think they'll kill him if that's what your thinking.. Maybe put him in his place but that is all at most Imo. And the size difference won't be to crazy, they won't be able to eat him. I think you can keep them together if you want.

Hey guys!

As MHDevelopments MHDevelopments reminded me, an update is long overdue! ;)

They're now between 5 and 6 inches, with two bigger, two smaller, and one in the middle (the size difference is really noticeable).
They share their space with the Ery Ery that is behaving rather nicely, three silver dollars, and some bottom dwellers (and the goddam Festae that's about to be thrown in a glass of water because he's annoying and I am too lazy to take him to an LFS).

They used to dart to food, being the first to hit it, to the point of driving the Ery obviously frustrated of not getting food (have been hand feeding him ever since, before any other fish), which has calmed down. In fact, the 3 bigger ones eat, the smaller two seem afraid to (they're not skinny, so i'm assuming they do eat some at least). Could they be getting tired of the same fish filet every other day?

I also noticed the silver dollars who were totally scared to death of exploring the tank now cruise with ease, sometimes darting for the food aimed at the Odoes. They're eating all my goddam Vallisneria, so I guess if I want plants, it'll have to be more hardy ones. Regardless, I am wondering if their bold attitude is not a factor of the smaller Odoes not eating as well.

I tried adding the VATF, but being an inch or two smaller, the Odoes were not having it, so i'm growing it in another tank until he's too thick to be eaten. ;)

Other than that, these fishes are plain amazing :D

Will try to take pictures tonight, and post them either right away, or whenever I get a chance. :)
