120 gallon. Changed 50 % now waiting 72 hours for new bacteria to grow which puts me at Saturday for a change but I am confused since the good new bacteria should be grown by then why would I take them out? So I can still get the nitrates down to healthier range but don't think I need to do 50% to get there - more likely 25% max?

You will not remove good bacteria with water changes please review this thread as we discussed it in good length.

So keep doing water changes daily.

its not just about nitrates.. and if you do the math it will be quite some time before the nitrates actually drop a significant amount with only a 25% wc. eventually you won't be able to get them any lower.

This of it sort of like this. You are put in a room and smoke is being forced in to replace the good clean air. You begin to feel it and start coughing. its toxic to your body.

Would you rather a) remove all smoke and replace with fresh air? b) remove 25% of it leaving the rest of it for you to choke on?

the net 25% of fresh air wouldn't displace only smoke but some of the new fresh air too. so it will be a while where you are suffering before the smoke levels reduce for you to comfortably breath again.

Are you adding peroxide in the tank while the fish is in there? If so it may be why your tank could be going through a new cycle. Peroxide does turn into water an O2 but it takes some time. While it is in its normal form it can be deadly to organic life!

Thx. Elsewhere I read that it changes instantly. Initially the store lady told me to put 1 tsp per gallon every hour. I never did that. But I did put a TBSP in 3 separate times for oxygen but wondered if it would kill good bacteria I'm trying to build up. Will read later when able.

Thx for the direction to discussion. Just got home & tank stinks & I see a strange white filament loop coming out of dorsal fin - tried & tried but camera can't seem to get a good clean photo.20170519_111312.jpg

it could be the slim coat coming off. if the water is stinking like rotten eggs it could be anaerobic pockets releasing from the substrate. I would be changing out as much water as I can or setup a second hold tank with fresh water an air stone and a heater till you can clean up the tank.

Make sure if you do this to ensure you clean the filters too, but your tap water that been treated with prime or an other water treatment product.

Getting overwhelmed - can't process so much - digital delay. . . .ugh - had a bad feeling buying topfin cuz remembered that I considered it to be inferior product but my income these days is also inferior so I just figured plenty of people do fine with it . . . But maybe not. So I just did a corollary research for what you are presenting to me and see that the product I'm using isn't even aquatic nitrifiers so I wasted me moolah? I'm going to just have to go with what you say to do to the best of my ability.
