Definately just a very stressed scared JD. There are currently only four real strains..Gold gene, Blue gene, regular gene, and EB gene variants....There may be more if different genes are mixed etc...but no such thing a a black gene JD.
there is normal jd which the fish pictured is, gold morph, and ebjd; blue gene is just a carrier of the ebjds traits

OH MY GAWD!!! YOU HAVE A NEW TYPE OF JD!!!!! Dude, it's female, they get very black sometimes. All JD's have red on dorsal, all of mine that I have kept for for like 25 years have had a red dorsal. I see your picture, I beleive you that it is black in person, but it is a regular female jack dempsey. Nice female!

:eek:well aparently you dont have an eye for unique qualities in fish...if you look closely you will see many differences beween mine and yours....the first being that mine has no blue markings on its dorsal fn...second the same goes for the lower pectoral type fins....also the tp of my fishes dorsal has a red trim to it...and finaly it has never once changed color in the months i have had it.....does anyone else notice the unique differences??? like i said its hard to capture on the camera....thank you tho

I might have to agree that it is a regular. I guess I would want better pics to really decide. JDs can vary their patterns a bit from being very light to very dark. The fish that was mentioned in contrast was a female where judging form your pics yours is looking very male.

Kindly post some more pics with some better lighting.

i have a female jd and she looks almost like yours, except she is a little darker. just last week she seemed to be in full breeding dress and was almost entirely black, but has since lightend up. i had high hopes that her and my male would get it on but they may be a little young to get it right yet, they are about 1 yr old. my female has always been dark and her and the male have always been the dominate fish in the tank.

I have a juvi male JD (about 1.5") with 3 of my 2"+ africans. He gets picked on often since he's the smallest, but he still has the light tan color. Maybe he isnt stressing because he knows he'll own the tank in a couple months.

ok...so its been about a month since i posted this....
my fish is still jet black with no signs of lightening up....after nearly a month!!!!:headbang2
how long do u think this "phase" you claim it is in will last??????:screwy:
a few days after my first post i placed it in a new tank with some baby parrots a large docile parrot and anothe smaller dempsey and a small flowerhorn...but still no color change...even with ample room and no stress...

Which shop did you get it from?

Agreed, this jack looked like mine till mine hit around 6 inches... Grew into a beautiful fish with tons of color, he grew out of the drab black with not much coloring...
