Petsmart has one of these pamphlets for a bunch of different families of fish.
Take a read, no wonder people get screwed up :screwy:

The pamphlet is titled "South American Cichlids" and has a pic of a midas on the cover. Other interesting points I highlighted.

If they follow those instructions, they will be buying many more fish to replace the ones that die. That's the idea.

They're using the 1" of fish per gallon rule on cichlids too. So a 15" South American (lol) Midas can comfortably live in a 15 gallon tank. That's good advice...NOT!!

Oh nevermind. I forgot that according to Petsmart, an adult Midas is only 3"-10" max.

The 3-10 inch rule is the max size they wil attain if you folow their care sheet! :D

I don't see a problem with the 10% WC every week, the 25% per months seems worse. Beceides I have heard stores say that you should change 1/3 every 3 weeks and no more otherwise your tank would be 'to clean'. This store also believes that if you take a filter pad out and leave it in the sun for 8hrs it still has benifical bacteria in it. They told me that even after a year, if you don't wash it under tap water, the benifical bacteria is still there and ready to go.:screwy: :screwy: :screwy: :screwy: :screwy: :screwy: :screwy:

I don't see a problem with the 10% WC every week,

this is not good.

for two reasons:

1. the average person overfeeds their fish

and

2. the average person overstocks.

you have seen some of the tanks of fellow monsterfishkeepers LOL

If I did only a 10% w/c on my 90 each week my giant fish would be dead within the month :)

The midas is SEMI-AGGRESSIVE?!?!?!? And generally peaceful with fish of the same size and temeperment. Until they get tired of the other fish then it's CLOBBERING TIME!

Those things made me laugh when I saw them. At least one of the staff members I know is actually knowledgeable and has done her homework. There's hope for other petsmart employees too. I still remember one time I went to petsmart and I met a guy who knows Jeff Rapps.
