I was hoping this thread would serve as a journal of sorts as they grow out and (hopefully) spawn. I thought maybe other members here would have purchased them but it looks like I'm the only one so far.

Great pick up Ryan! They should be dubbed the "Basket mouth Severum". They look like an evolutionary bridge between Caquetaia spectabilis and severum. Verry, very cool. If I had room I'd be all over these guys.

That's actually a great observation. Physically, they do resemble C. spectabilis in a lot of ways -- body shape, the gills/mouth, the three black spots, the red eyes. I've never kept any of the Caquetaia species but I can see the similarities in pictures online.

They do resemble the color and shape of most Heroini fish, including juvenile Hypselacara.

For anyone getting them, it should be noted that they are not as friendly as young severums. Mine attack each other, but today I also caught the smaller ones stalking and attacking the 2" orange head goes that Peter sent me. The Heroina would swim up to the geos really slowly, then dart at them really fast and take bites out of their fins! I had to net the geos into their own tank. So they probably would do best with larger, hardier cichlids.

Dan said they put some small Heroina in a tank with Ivanacara and the Heroina ate them. So don't try them with fish smaller than the Heroina!
