good idea right now i have strung netting all over my ponds it looks like **** but at least my fish are alive thx for the advice guppy

Outta curiousity, why are they illegal to kill, not that I'd like to see one dead though one wiped out all the fish in my neighbors pond. I think my fish will be ok cause it has very good hiding places for them.
Some are endangered, with some it's an environmental thing...they scavnege some and keep the population of some fish in order, BUT they are opportunistic, proven by your neighbor
and they were here first... some people even think we could be related, I don't see a resemblence...except to a third cousin on my uncles side, I think it's the eyes on each side of his head
but a nice kid and HE stays out of peoples ponds !

i heard a terrible story of a woman who put netting all over her pond and a pair of Fox cubs got caught in it, one survived but the other died 
.... also netting is dodgy for frogs and thing... but you cant raise to too high above the pond because the herron can the just walk under them... lol its a tough problem... one way is to put a big plastic heron, available from many places, and as herons are terratorial they stay away, this worked for my friend... Till Mating season... lol
I wanted to have a paintball war conveniatly placed when the heron was around, but my parents relaized what i was up to and stopepd me... my bro simpy says 'it's only illegal IF you get caught'... lol, but we havnt seen a heron here yet

really the best deterent is a small, fast, loud god.. terriers are amazing... either that or some Piranhas would teach the heron a lesson, the next time he wades into the pond... FIGHT BACK!!! lol, but seriusoly the Herons will actually just stab all the fish, just to kill them eve nif they dont eat them all

I think the sound of the gun alone would scare it away.
What we use for canadian geese is a model rocket ignitor and an M-80 or other loud firework, just push ignitor button and bang. (Geese just crap everywhere except my yard now as they hate the noise)
or Tippmann 98 with Flatline, response trigger and color that drab bird up
