Also fake snakes ( or a trained real snake) . They work well, but people that use them say to move the fake snake or alligator every couple days. You won't have to move the real snake.

Paintball guns are better than BBs for this and no one can accuse you of trying to kill it.Joshy;622975;622975 said:Although in theory and by law you should not do this..
BB guns or Air guns work perfectly. You do not damage the bird of kill it (99% of the time anyway). And after a few visits of being shot at, they learn that the area is not safe.
They are smart birds, they learn how to get past all the netting and devices, but they also learn what areas pose threats to them..
Saying that, i actually agree a dog is a good option though. Even if you only get a little yappy dog and leave him in the garden during the day.

Netting your pond will prevent heron attacks, providing that you follow this simple rule:- You need to suspend the net between 6" to 1 foot above the surface of the pond and keep it tight, otherwise the heron may try to land on the net and spear through it. It's effective, but unfortunately it's also obtrusive. If its small garden trellis works well just put it out when job finished take fold it away.
My fave and the one i have used is to suspend strong fishing line about a foot above the ground all around the pond edge.
or somthing like this
