Sorry for your loss, I hate to say it but the only way to get rid of it now is to harrass it to where it is not worth the trouble for it to come back.

Your not going to find anything pretty to keep them away. Dollar store sells rubber snakes (if the heron doesn't try to eat it).

(I strung monofiliment fishing line around mine 4 lines high and angled the stakes inward so they couldn't land on the edge, I used fruit tree netting too.)

string only works when the bird are swimming in the pond. if the pond is small enough put netting over if it is to large there are many things on the markets. mute swams are also very territorial so you could get them but they are not cheap. motion detecting sprinklers work. and fake heron work sometimes also! you could try flying a kite over that is what some things are on the market(just some kaites:screwy: )

what about a peacock? would that scare it off seriously..

The string will work, it has to be angled out over the water, or very high (3+ft).

I see peacocks with herons around here together so I'm gonna soy no, beside, do you really want that noise (peacocks)?

it is possible because some peacocks can be very agressive!

a friend of mine moved into their house and found a peacock in the backyard. so it just hangs around but when they get near it hisses.:screwy:

so it probably matters on the peacocks temperament

Most of them do that to people and dogs (never seen a cat get that close:D ) saw one hiss at a horse once, but never another bird.

get a taser and tase that SOB

I kid I kid.....I would say install a low voltage electrical fence but I'm not sure if thats a good idea next to the water?

or you can just cover rope or lines of some sort in grease and bhut jolokia chilies, like they did in india to keep the elephants out,LOL

Although in theory and by law you should not do this..

BB guns or Air guns work perfectly. You do not damage the bird of kill it (99% of the time anyway). And after a few visits of being shot at, they learn that the area is not safe.

They are smart birds, they learn how to get past all the netting and devices, but they also learn what areas pose threats to them..

Saying that, i actually agree a dog is a good option though. Even if you only get a little yappy dog and leave him in the garden during the day.

I hate to say it but this is the most effective way. I love to observe these birds in the wild but they can clean out a pound in no time at all. Coasting hundreds if not a thousands of dollars:eek:.

Yeah, great idea. Then you have two predators eating your fish. Snapping turtles don't eat herons.

This might be of some use, there are a few things you could try.

And to all those who suggest killing it. That is really REALLY bad advice. Killing a heron is very illegal unless you have a nuisance permit of some sort and you're not likely to get one for a pet koi pond. Keep in mind that these are just animals looking to survive and if you're going to keep fish outdoors it is a risk you should be willing to take.
