He's finally coming out of his shell!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great minds think alike, KJ!! ^^ That is what we had talked about doing. We're still discussing it. Growing them a bit in the 35 until they're 3" and then moving them over with a divider to the 75 until they're close to him then just removing the divider.

We still haven't decided.... But I know we're not getting any big fish that need a seperate tank any time soon.

thats where our problems came in. We were buying fish that needed their own separate tank. now that we are downsizing, we are combining tanks that can go together, and should be down to 4 tanks when all is said and done. we are looking for a cheap tank that is atleast 75 gallons or more so we can combine our bottom dwellers tank with our cichlids. Of course, Lucy is one fish that can never have tankmates but thats just fine with me!

yea, my only problem doing that is that I can't combine Jelly with anyone (other than other cichlids) so that's 1 tank for 1 fish, then Kayli and Whip each have their own tanks, and the plecos have to share with the piranhas as I don't have a tank big enough for them that doesn't have something incompatible (goldfish) in it already.

When Kayli moves (hopefully in the next week or two) then I'll have room for the Sanchezi, and I'll have to figure out when I can get down there to get him, so that'll be out of your way, and you can have more space.

i fully think you should consider adding more pygos with him, in a bigger tank of course. I had my solo RB in a 75 alone for like 5 months, i thought he had come oot of his shell till i got a wicked good deal on 2 other reds, i added them and the difference is amazing, all three fish are wicked active and arent skittish at all.

I realy would like too, I would likenothing better to have a small (3-4 critters) but my only concern is his bad eye. ><

I did post a thread about it a while back, and it seems to me that he's lost most, if not all, of the sight in it. I don't want other piranhas taking advantage of that weakness in my favorite fish, and killing him.

I would be truly devastated....that's why there is sooo much hesitation on my part to put him in a shoal....As I've said, he is my all-time favorite, and my baby fish, and I would feel horrible if he was killed by other RBPs.

But, Even as I say this, I know it's not exactly fair for him to be alone (with a pair of plecos) and I really WANT to get 2 more babies, and toss up a divider in my 75 until they catch up with my favorite boy, then let them all be together.

And I say two more babies, even though 4 in a 75 will be pushing the limit, is simply because we already have 1 baby, and can't risk keeping only two together, instead we're going with three babies (total) just to make sure we don't lose one. And if aggression is a problem, I'll have a 35 gallon handy to use as Quarentine. If my fiance doesn't use it for Angelfish.

So, while it would be great to have a shoal, I don't want to risk losing Whiplash over it.

How long did it take for Whiplash to settle in after you moved him into his new home? I just moved mine from a 30 into a 75 and they are still very skittish. I was expecting them to be this way for a while and it's only been two days so I'm not worried, just wondering.

Jredner, it took us 3 tries with him....We first tried between 2-3 inches, and he hated it. Then we tried again between 3-4 inches, and even though he was more active, he still didn't use more than a quarter of the tank. So we moved him into the 35, and back into the 75 (where he is currently) and now he's all over the tank!!

If yours is a single, it could take just as long (months) if it's a group, it may happen quicker.

I have four and they are about 4" right now (when I moved them I tried to judge as best I could but). They have been in the new tank for 5 days now and have settled in nicely. For the first few days they just hid behind some driftwood but in the past two days they've been exploring and going out in the open a lot more.

o i missed the bad eye part, i take back what i said then. i say grow him out as a finger chaser then, he'll be real impressive full grown and with a nice tank

More like a finger run-away-fromer!! lol

We just recently discovered how muich sight is really in that eye. We've had suspicions for a while...but we tried a couple of feeders (QTed and gut loaded) and when they STAY on that side of him (where his bad eye is) and he doesn't give chase....or when you flick the lights on in the morning, and you know he's asleep, and he doesn't move since his good eye is to the wall, or when you put your hand up to the glass on the left side, he takes off, but on the right, he doesn't even move....you know there's no point in even bothering with a shoal...that eye is completely blind.

Just discovered that bit of nasty information the other day, with the light and the feeders. I don't even think he ate a single one....although the baby sure did!! lol

I don't know if were going to buy him a smaller tank, and just leave him to however big he's going to get (since his growth has been slowing down @ 5") and I don't think he's going to reach his full potential. And we might just put the baby in the 75, and get 2 more, and have a small shoal of 3.
